The Average Lifespan of Makeup

I've noticed that a LOT of my friends keep makeup around forever, especially mascara, so I want to remind everyone about the average shelf life of basic cosmetics:

Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner - 3 to 6 months. That's right, it's very short so buy cheap!

Powders (including eye shadows, loose pressed powder, blush and contour) - 2 to 3 years

Liquids & Creams (including foundations, blush, eye shadows, bronzers, highlights and contour) - 12 to 18 months

Lipstick & Lip Gloss - 1 to 2 years

Pencils (eye, lip and brow) - 2 to 3 years

Nail Polish - 1 to 2 years (if stored in a cool, dry place)

Perfume - 2 to 3 years (if stored in a cool, dry place)

Sunscreen - most sunscreens have a 2 to 3 years life if stored in a cool, dry place (also, check for expiration date on the label)

Eye cream - 1 year

Moisturizer - 12 to 18 months

To prolong the shelf life of your cosmetics, keep items stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Capping products tightly after you have used them also, helps to extend the life of your cosmetics. So does using regularly cleaned makeup brushes, as you won't get dirt and oil from your fingers in it. So clean out your cabinet for 2008, definitely toss out anything that smells odd and try to remember to label new purchases with the date you got them!
