G-Star Raw S/S '10
The G-Star Raw Runway Runway show turned out to be by far the most exciting, large-scale show I saw at New York Fashion Week, and I was thrilled to be there in person. It was held at the Hammerstein Ballroom, an enormous venue that often hosts big-name concerts. It was the first time I attended a Fashion Show that had balcony seating. The balcony, however, turned out to be a great location to capture all the action.
Models appeared 5 at time at the back as if beamed down in a stream of light, and then walked a runway that zig-zagged throughout the venue. Everything was kept moving at a brisk pace, as several models would be walking various parts of the runway at once, so I found it best to concentrate on one area in order to catch all the looks in the collection.
The Spring collection itself was a re-imagining of "vintage Mediterranean ‘high society’ couture." As a result the garments featured a lot of blue, from a dark midnight wash to a bright blue that put me in mind of a deep lagoon. The overall feel of the collection was of old school resort wear mixed with a bit of urban edge that did not take itself too seriously. G-Star had its own interpretation of current trends with harem pant styled denim, and military inspired pieces.
The show a seriously celeb packed event with Juliette Lewis, Lindsay Lohan (and her newly endowed lips), Taylor Momsen, Ryan Kwanten (Jason on True Blood...swoon), Jared Leto, Elettra Wiedemann, Mena Suvari, Alan Cumming, Kara DioGuardi, Christian Siriano, Cat Deeley, Kat von D, Katrina Bowden, Ryan Adams, Corbin Bleu, Frederique van der Wal, Matthew Settle, Damien Fahey, Eric Balfour, Peaches Geldof, Asher Book, Walter Perez, Miss J. Alexander, Byrdie Bell, Yfke Sturm, Lorenzo Martone and Tyson Beckford all in the front row. Whew!
