Trend Alert: Swishy Leather Skirts

It's started with the impossibly chic 3.1 Philip Lim skirt with leather so buttery soft that it easily swished in schoolgirl pleats. So unusual compared to the typical pencil skirts you tend to see! I just died of want, but it was so out of my price range... :( Well, here are some more options I've found... unfortunately the best way to pull this off is with soft, super high quality leather, which doesn't help the cost... ah well, I shall share anyway!

Human Fat Found In Cosmetics

This makes so so grossed out and horrified that all I can do is paste the article for you:

Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing some 60 people to sell their fat and other human tissue to Italian co-conspirators for cosmetic use in Europe, authorities say.

The suspects were arrested in central Peru this month and a search is underway for seven others, lead prosecutor Jorge Sans Quiro said.

The fat was purchased "to be commercialised in European (cosmetology) laboratories," he said.

The prosecutor's indictment said the gang allegedly targeted farmers and indigenous people on remote Andean roads, tricking them by offering jobs before killing them.

Police began arrests after discovering early this month a container with human fat that was being shipped to Lima from the Andean city of Huanuco, some 400 kilometres northeast of Lima.

Signs of "an international network trafficking human fat" first surfaced about two months ago, according to General Felix Burga, head of the police criminal division.

Peruvian press cited him as saying the fat can be sold for $US15,000 ($16,000) per gallon (3.8 litres) in European countries.

The alleged plot revived the Andean legend of the "Pishtacos", white foreigners who were said to suck the fat out of people travelling on lonely roads at night, making fine soaps, lubricants, healing salves and beauty creams out of the tissue.

Links à la Mode: Food for Thought

links a la mode
Edited by Ashe Mischief

This is my first time editing since I wrote Good Cop/Bad Cop: Participating in Links a la Mode. Thank you all so much for making this my most pleasurable experience in editing yet!

I’m not sure if it’s because American Thanksgiving is a week away, or because the blogosphere is ablaze with Kate Mosses’ unforgettable quote, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” but either way, I’ve got food on my mind. This week, you brought me the best kind of food–rich, decadent, and 100% calorie-free! That’s right–you delivered highly thoughtful posts on fashion, fashion blogging & communities, and more.

On a personal note, ferOHHHsh has asked that we share her post about her close friend’s near-fatal accident. I believe that the fashion community is one of surprising strength, dignity, caring and compassion, and that it was worth sharing. We’re sending your friend speedy thoughts for a wonderful recovery!

RIP Daul Kim

I don't usually write much about models, but I'm sad to say that 20-year-old Daul Kim was found dead in Paris this morning. As a 5'1 Filipino, I've always been hugely inspired by Asian models, who I feel are such an underrepresented minority in fashion magazines and catwalks.

Daul recently walked in the Zac Posen, Matthew Williamson, and Chanel shows, and has done editorials for British Vogue, i-D, V and more. She also loved to paint and, randomly, collect forks. Her career has been a fairytale, but there are rumors that this is yet another model suicide for 2009 - could the agencies please do a better job of taking care of these young girls???

Zac Posen to Launch Z Spoke

Woooo, Zac Posen is launching a lower priced line called Z Spoke in spring!!! To be sold exclusively at Saks, it starts at $78 for a cotton tee to $675 for a knit dress. The 60-piece collection is supposedly minimalist and utilitarian, but from the pictures I feel like there are some interesting prints and embellishments.

Retro Cone Bras

There's rumors that the pointy cone bra popular back in the 50's is making a come back! A UK department store, John Lewis, has reported that sales of point bras are up by 33% compared to the same time last year. Brits are quite often on point for upcoming global trends, and it makes sense when you consider the 80's revival fashion is currently rocking. Whether going for Madonna or Jane Russell, a new conical bra could be a fun way to update your look!

Currently it's not an easy style to find, but I'm sure it will be everywhere in a month! Until then, hopefully the Triumph Doreen or some of these more subtly cone shaped bras will tide you over:

Halter Water Color Dress

Need a flirty cocktail frock for the upcoming holiday soirees but on a stricter budget this year? Sak's sale to the rescue! This Ali Ro dress immediately caught my eye with its vibrant watercolor print, perfect to keep wearing in 2010! Originally $276, it's currently $165.

Fishnet Sweater

Fishnet SweaterThe super loose knit of this sweater feels kinda Rodarte to me, what do you think? I like that it's a mix of different patterns, giving the top a lot of depth and interest. Buy at Couture Candy for $188, though you may get 10% off with the code "COUTURE" at checkout!
