Tim Gunn is Iron Man! Who Knew?

Marvel is releasing a comic mini-series called "Models Inc." that takes place at New York Fashion Week! "Millicent Collins (aka Millie the Model), Patsy Walker, also known as the superheroine Hellcat, and Mary Jane, the model-turned actress who is the sometimes wife of Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man" will team up to solve the murder of a "young set designer". Best of all, in the second issue Tim Gunn will don the Iron Man suit "to save a fashion exhibition from evildoers." Well, who better to save the world? The first issue will be on new stands August 26th. I can't wait! I love the idea of fashionistas everywhere meandering down to the local comic book store. How about you? Mens Swimwear: Board Shorts vs Trunks

I've have always wondered what the difference between men's swim trunks and board shorts are. And by "always" I mean the last five minutes! Well, thanks to Google, I can now provide your inquiring minds with answers:

Boards Shorts:
Made for surfing. They're usually more durable, longer (about knee length), and have a velcro fly with laces to fit at the waist.

Swim Trunks:
Made for being in the water. They tend to be softer and flimsier, have mesh lining, can be a little shorter, and most have an elastic waist.

Really the differences are about the use, though board shorts have definitely gained in popularity as men's general swimwear. I blame the length, guys seem to shy away from showing their lower thighs for fear of looking effeminate / European. Which do you prefer?

Plus Sized Swimwear

I know I know, I'll be trying to get up posts for the rest of this week but it's gonna be tough, please excuse me!

So I went searching for some nice plus-sized bikinis and pretty much found zilch. I hate that there's such limited choices, but I have to admit that I don't know a single plus-sized lady who would be caught dead in a two piece. And tankinis don't count! Do you think it's a case of "if they build them, they will come" or is there just no market?

Always obsessed over the tutu dress Carrie Bradshaw wore in the opening credits of "Sex and the City?" Well, here's a very affordable version just for you! The real one was actually a pink tank and two tiered tulle skirt, but for $32 at Lulu*s do you really want to nitpick??

Designer to Watch: Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung is definitely an up and coming designer to watch! After the shuttering of Bill Blass, where he worked for the past five years, Gurung has set out on his own. His debut collection showed at NY Fall '09 Fashion Week, which I wish I had seen! The pieces were very architectural and strong, with some random girly details. Very sexy empowered!
You can find pieces at Bloomingdale's in NY, hopefully more places soon! Dresses retail for about $2,200, oh my!

The Mysterious Case of the Burnt Body

I recently got sunburnt on my body wearing SPF 30, and decided to slather on a heavier 60 the next day. It helped, but did NOT prevent me from getting a little redder on my chest. On the other hand, I wore SPF 15 on my face and barely got tan. I look like I can't match my foundation since my neck is so brown. What's going on here???

A sunscreen’s SPF, or sun protection factor, measures how much it protects you from UVB radiation, which can cause sunburn. The number is calculated by comparing the time needed for a person to burn unprotected with how long it takes for that person to burn wearing sunscreen. So a person who turns red after 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure is theoretically protected 15 times longer if they adequately apply SPF 15. So really a higher SPF does not provide that much better of a protection, but a longer protection? SPF 30 blocks something like 97% of UVB rays already, SPF 100 blocks 99%, a pretty marginal difference.

Except sunscreen wears off. You should be reapplying every two hours you're out and don't think just a dab will do you! You need to apply an ounce to truly protect your skin, about the size of a shot glass for all you party animals. And make sure you rub it in before you get out in the sun!

So why did my body suffer while my face was spared? I kept reapplying my SPF 15 and practically used an ounce per pore each time! But, due to a false sense of security over a higher number, I haphazardly applied SPF 30 and 60 on my body, definitely not using enough.
And if you think you're prefer some oil to get a bronze body, my friend told me my chest currently looks "like a cougar's." From now on I'm rolling around in a vat of sunscreen before I step foot outside again!

Fashion Week Video Game?

For the first time on the videogame platform, game players and fashion lovers alike will be able to enter the world of high fashion at Fashion Week, with a true insider’s point of view. Games will feature world-class industry gurus, top models and the star-studded runways of Fashion Week events worldwide. The first titles will be available in 2010 in all major markets around the world.

Bird by Juicy Couture

I've never been a big fan of Juicy Couture, designed by Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy. It's just very West Coast and I'm an East Coast kinda girl! But, in August, they're coming out with a new line, Bird, which has a much edgier and urban look. It'll be stocked by Bergdorf Goodman and some Juicy Couture boutiques, and will cost an average of $300, knits being around $150 and outerwear going up to $600.

A Tour of the Versace Mansion

As some of you might know, I went to Miami for the past few days! One of the most exciting parts was getting two private tours of the famous Versace Mansion, previously owned by the late Gianni Versace, the famous Italian designer, from 1992-1997. Gianni was murdered on the front steps of his home on July 15th, 1997.

Madonna often partied at the mansion with Gianni, and stayed in the second floor right front bedroom. The mansion used to only have showers, but Madonna demanded a tub, so it was added in! Princess Diana often stayed in the second floor left front suite. Elton John stayed in the lower-left front bedroom, and Prince (the artist) often stayed in the lower right front bedroom.

Presently it's owned by millionaire Peter Loftin. It is now a five star private invitation only club where many upscale parties and gatherings are held. Members pay $40,000 to join plus $3,600 annually. To stay in one of the 10 rooms runs up to $5,000 a night.

If you're wondering why I had pretty much unlimited access to the place, I know someone who knows someone who knows the manager ;) There are public tours too, I highly recommend checking the place out if you can!
