Links à la Mode: Evolve

links a la mode
Edited by Sandra/Debutante Clothing

It’s over kids – 2009 is done. Everyone is probably completing their resolutions list, which we never keep past March. This year, I have no list. I have just promised myself to evolve – learn something new, try new products, evolve in my style. Making yourself better, not different, seems to be on many bloggers’ minds. Fasshonaburu evolves by discovering her style, Fashion Cents helps us shop for designer while feeling great about our budget, and Hello Beauty teaches us how to finally do a smoky eye, quickly and simply. We don’t need to spend a lot, try too hard, or even shop a lot to start anew – we can make 2010 the year we get one year better than the last. Happy New Year – Cheers!

Affordable NYE Dresses

It can be easy to forget that the majority of people cannot drop $175 on a party dress or dash over to Intermix for a last minute outfit. So I've compiled a list of cute dresses that are all under $100 and can possibly be found in-store and therefore in time for New Year's Eve!

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

One Shoulder Zipper & Ruffle Top

One Shoulder Zipper & Ruffle TopI like how the tough zipper embellishment balances out the sweet ruffle detail of this Cynthia Steffe top! This plus the sequin skirt is perfect for a NYE soiree, but you could easily rock with some skinny jeans as well! Buy at Neiman Marcus for $75.

Dove Pouchette

This mini crossbody bag by Marc by Marc Jacobs is already completely sold out at ShopBop and is selling out quick at Bloomingdale's! Get the gray version for $198, but don't wait long!

Victorian Platform Wedges

Victorian Platform WedgesThere are some beyond hideous shoes on the appropriately named site Irregular Choice, so I decided I would find at least one cute pair! Here they are, similar to the ACNE wedge, but a more affordable $240.

Woven Denim Dress

Woven Denim DressThis Maison Martin Margiela dress obviously reminded me of deconstructed Rodarte pieces, but if you look close it's actually made from strips of denim woven together! It does not have any lining if you look at the pictures of it being worn, FYI. Buy at Brown's Fashion for the "sale" price of $504.

Rodarte Thigh High Cut Outs

Rodarte Thigh High Cut OutsOne of the star pieces of the fall Rodarte collection were these leather thigh highs covered in cut outs. Well, if you were gifted a bazillion trillion dollars this holiday, you can afford them at $920 at Opening Ceremony. Ok, I admit, I've spent more than that on leather ONCE before :P

Knit Boyfriend Cardigan

Knit Boyfriend CardiganI'm looking for a slightly long cardigan with a little bit of structure as opposed to blanket flowiness. I'm thinking something with a thicker knit would be perfect, possibly like this one? You can buy it at Urban Outfitters for just $38 in marbled red, green, blue or super pretty blush.

Three Wolves Tee

None of my fashion friends get my "Three Wolves" references, so that is going to be remedied right now! Check out this tee from Amazon, which you THINK is your basic unfashionable article of clothing. And then check out the customer reviews... hours of hilarity!!! Claims such as "frightens Chuck Norris, "Endorsed by Susan Boyle," "Has mystical powers," was the top seller on Amazon for a bit, is still the 13th most popular item in their clothing section... it even made a guest appearance on Dwight in an episode of "The Office!" So if you forgot to give someone a gift and they have a great sense of humor, this would be my recommendation!

Black Inverted Diamond Pendant

Black Inverted Diamond PendantA black diamond with the pointy end sticking out, could this piece be any more "rock"??? It's currently on sale for $350 at Alex & Chloe. Not exactly in the affordable range yet, but perhaps something you could splurge on with gift money you may have gotten?

Links à la Mode: The Countdown Begins

links a la mode

Edited by Dramatis Personae

The countdown has begun–not only until the end of the year–but until the end of the first decade in the 21st century. That’s kind of amazing to think about. Styletastic and Sway, Sway, Away! both look at fashion from the Oughts with two distinctly different visions. [the3st] interviews the founder of ModCloth, while Wicked & Whimsy reviews Closet Confidential (by the hilarious Winona of DaddyLikey fame!).

Since this will be my last edit of links a la mode for this year, see you all in 2010!

I Wish

It's Christmas Eve and I had an urge to play shop all the amazing things I would buy if I was rich. I tried to keep prices over $750 when possible, just so things would be so permanently out of my reach I wouldn't even be sad that I couldn't have them!

And... a strange thing happened! I was looking over my list of covetable items and saw patterns I didn't expect! You would think that after years of obsessing about fashion I would easily be able to summarize my personal style. And while I still could have predicted the majority of my style traits, the number of surprises was... well, surprising!

I figured I would be heavy on Helmut Lang and leather and Rick Owens and things futuristic edgy. I also knew there would be a lot of black and grey... but I had no idea on the extent of that! I need to learn to look at bright pieces more often instead of immediately going for the neutral version.

I was quite surprised at how much I appear to love YSL Tribute pumps! Someone plleeease tell me they're comfortable, because they are definitely going on my Shopping Bucket List. And boy, oh boy do I love platform pumps, but in reality I rarely wear them - time to research ones that don't give you blisters. Wow, I didn't put a single pair of flats on my list, I didn't notice until just now.

I also see that I adore draping. Again, I had an idea I did, but didn't realize quite how much! This pleases me as it would give a soft touch to all the edgy pieces I gravitate to.

And I never in a million, trillion years would have thought I wanted a Davy Crockett hat, yet there it is! At least we know my sense of whimsy is still intact :P

I cannot possibly recommend doing this more. Yes, it hurts a little to look at things you may never have, but I don't think I've ever had such a grasp on my personal style before. Now when I go shopping I can look for similar, more affordable pieces that I know I'll really cherish and will work with my current wardrobe.

I hope you guys have a great holiday! And if there are any generous millionaires currently reading this, I'm usually a size S (2-4) and wear a shoe size 6.5 ;)

Silk Fishy Skirt

I found a new (to me) store that carries hip, emerging designers! This silk skirt by Angelika Paschbeck is cool, the hand embroidered yellow eyes really pop in a slightly scary but totally chic way. Buy at Welcome Hunters for the sale price of $175, originally $500!

Wanna Party Tights

These limited edition House of Holland for Pretty Polly tights will probably sell out super fast, so don't dilly dally! Buy them at UK Tights for £12 or about $19 USD. Maybe you'll get them in time for NYE!

White Wool Peacoat

White Wool PeacoatIf you put this on and walked outside right now, you're be camouflaged! Well, from the waist to neck. I really like the wide collar on this piece, but it lacks a little waist definition for my taste. It's the last day of Bluefly's coat sale, so get this one for the great deal of $108.

Studded Workboots

I've been coveting these studded workboots for for a while now, they'd be so fun to pair with a really feminine dress. They were out of almost every size for months, but looks like they've restocked. So run and get them from Asos for $135.98 while you can.
...Or for a similar look you can go with these boots from Aldo for $140. Yay, options!

Sex and the City 2 Trailer

Because I am honor bound as a fashion blogger to post this:

Origami Pleat Blazer

Origami Pleat BlazerThis wool origami pleat jacket has some really stand out detailing without being in your face, or over the top. I would love to add this to my work wardrobe, I really need more blazers, but I can't even afford the reasonable $102 price tag at Asos right now, alas.icon

Grey Silk Cowl Neck Top

Grey Silk Cowl Neck TopHelmut Lang does some amazing things with simple silhouettes, how can something be so basic and yet so eye grabbing??? Get this beautiful top for the sale price of $233 at Ssense before it sells out.

RIP Brittany Murphy & Clueless Inspiration

Tai From Clueless

I was really quite shocked and sad to hear that Brittany Murphy passed away over the weekend. Like probably a great many of you, my thoughts immediately turned to "Clueless" one of the great fashion movies of the '90s. I was totally obsessed with that movie as I entered high school... who am I kidding, I'm still obsessed! So, as a tribute to Brittany, I created this collage of Clueless inspired pieces, including a flannel shirt from pre-Tai makeover days and an Alaia dress ("It's, like, a totally important designer!").

Slant Pocket Pants

Slant Pocket PantsIf you have a very narrow, boyish frame you can add a bit of curves with these pants! The pockets stick out just a touch, creating the illusion of hips which in turn makes your waist look smaller in comparison! Buy at Acrimony for $230.

Two Tone Paneled Dress

Two Tone Paneled DressApparently more and more women are rocking out lingerie as outerwear, something I don't think I would ever have the guts to try. BUT I do love the occasional lingerie-inspired piece, like this beautiful Alessandro Dell'Acqua dress! Buy for the 50% off price of $307 at Brown's Fashion.

Leather Wristlet Pouch

Leather Wristlet PouchThis reminds me of those CLICK Bags that were so popular a few years ago. Buy in black, grey, violet or red for $378 at Searle.

Fringe Back Tee

Fringe Back TeeWell, it's waaay too late to buy presents online, so I might as well post items that won't even ship until next year! Pre-order this way cool t-shirt with cool chainette fringe along the back for $88 at Boutique To You.

Petticoat Skirt

Petticoat SkirtThis pirate-esque skirt is certainly something! A bit too costume-y for my taste, but definitely amusing, you can buy it at ModCloth for $55.

Moccasin Style Wedge Booties

Moccasin Style Wedge BootiesThese grey, suede wedges are subtle stand out pieces, if you know what I mean. The moccasin stitching, the extra large opening at the ankle, the architectural wedge - it's all in the details! Buy at Coclico for $316 before they sell out!

Sleeveless Shoulder Pad Shift

Sleeveless Shoulder Pad ShiftA sleeveless silk dress with shoulder pads, how unusual! Available in black or burgundy, it's on sale at Intermix for just $89. But even better, use the code "SALE40" to get an additional 40% off it or any other sale item you buy! if my math is correct (don't hold me to it) that would make it around $54, what a deal!

Toggle Faux Fur Coat

Toggle Faux Fur CoatThe toggle closures contrast perfectly with the inherent glam-ness of a faux fur coat! You could wear this with jeans or a cocktail frock and it's currently on sale at Guess for $140. Though it retailed for only $8 more, don't you hate it when they do that??

"Project Runway" Season 7 Cast Revealed!

Back in NYC (thank GOD!), it's the new cast of "Project Runway!" Looking at their pre-show portfolios, I'm gonna pick out some contenders (side note: I had forgotten, but I picked Meana Irina as my favorite last time!):

Maya (front right, black dress, bangs) - That studded bag she did is beyond covetable! Very edgy, it's like she designs for Rhianna. Ooo, looks like she can do flowy, romantic too, always good to be versatile. She's my personal favorite and I hope she makes it to the final show!

Amy (back left, silver tunic) - Very architectural and unique! Some of her pieces make me think of Jil Saunder, but more cluttered... will she over-embellish her way out?

There are a few who seem to have few or no actual pieces in their portfolios, can they actually sew?? Heck, I can draw pictures of cute clothing, maybe you'll see me on Season 8 :)

Back to reality... the season starts Thursday, Jan 14 on Lifetime - hooray!

Interview with Model Liu Wen

Liu WenWhen I started blogging on fashion three years ago, I never in my life thought I would have a chance to talk to a Victoria's Secret model, especially not the first Asian model to walk in their famous fashion show. Liu Wen is a rising star in the fashion industry, having snagged appearances in British Vogue & Harper's Bazaar and has walked the catwalks for Chanel, Prada, Gucci and many more! I was able to take up a few minutes of her increasingly busy schedule and ask a few questions:

You entered a modeling contest on a whim in order to win a laptop computer! Did you have any interest in fashion growing up?
Loving fashion is every girl's nature. It's also my motivation to participate in a model competition and become a professional model.

Many women find inspiration from models' personal styles. How would you describe your look and what inspires you (designers, music, painters?)
My style is a little boyish, masculine-feminine, perhaps because I appreciate much those successful and competent women images in films. I don’t really have a special inspiration.

Congrats on being the first Asian model to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show! You looked breathtaking, did you have a special diet and/or beauty regimen in the days before the show?
No special regime. Just at the day of show, I didn’t dare to eat before it. Just looking at the others who were eating all the time, and looking at myself who would wear a bikini with belly exposed, I just dared to drink my vitaminwater and stay hydrated.

As an Asian American myself, I grew up with a less diverse representation of beauty. What do you think has changed in the mentality of the fashion world to make all these opportunities possible for you?
I think it’s because of the fast development of China and the whole Asia. For example, Olympic games or Universal expo which took place and will happen in China/Asia bring attention to us from US and Europe and changed their ideas about us. So they want to be closer to Asia, and bring in some Asian or Chinese stuff.

Your career is a great example of hard work resulting in success! Do you have any words of advice to those whose aspire to work in the fashion industry, particularly young Asian women who view you as a role model?
Any chance is for those who are ready, so i think it's important to try our best to do well what we should, and don't think about what I can get or lose from this all the time. Keep our own style, don't always imitate others, but study how the others succeed or lose.

What do you hope to achieve next in your career?
Of course I hope for more ads and to work with all the great photographers that I have never worked with, and try different styles of fashion stories.

Leather Cuff

Leather CuffCuff bracelets are tres chic, but I always have issues wearing them as I have the most narrow wrists in the world! Even an adjustable kind like this leather one doesn't usually go small enough, but it's so tempting anyway! It comes in a bunch of different textures and colors and is $78 at Couture Candy.
