ANTM Winner Lands McQueen Campaign

For the first time ever, a winner of "America's Next Top Model" has landed an international campaign! Nicole Fox, who won last season's (or cycle, whatever) 5'7 and under modeling contest will be featured in print and multimedia ads for Alexander McQueen. I'm waiting for Tyra to make a statement about how amazing she is for giving a "petite" model (5'7 is not petite!) a chance any second now.

I actually watched the season (cycle, whatever), because it was focused on petite models and I'm 5'1. So I can say, without a doubt, that Nicole really was born to model and that I was actually sorry for her since girls on ANTM never get anywhere! I'm happily eating my words now.

Adrianne Curry must be furious!

Please Do Not Feed The Models Tee

Not affordable like the last Please Don't Feed The Models Tee I've seen, but at least it's in stock! And love the graphic! Buy for 36 € or about $50 US dollars at Style for Style.

Peplum Back Coat

Peplum Back CoatIt's sooooo cold outside! But cute winter coats are starting to go on sale, like this peplum back one from Juicy Couture! Originally $398, it's now $279.

Pointelle Cropped Sweater

Pointelle Cropped SweaterWith it's crochet sleeves and back, the idea of wearing this Camilla & Marc sweater makes me feel so cold (it's freezing out today!). But I love how it's crochet and yet gives off an athletic vibe, which is quite chic for spring. Buy at ShopBop for $380.

My Fashion Challenge: Day Two

While I don't plan on posting my looks daily, I do think yesterday's look was close to a win for me! I managed to keep my relatively clean style without sacrificing a fashionable look! And while my jewelry was NOT changed, which I really need to make myself do, I managed to take my look to the next level with my beret! Now I just need to teach my friends to hold the camera lower when taking a shot of me so my legs don't disappear! What do you guys think of my ensemble?

Links à la Mode: A Touch of Frivolity

links a la modeEdited by Retro Chick

It’s been a long time since pay day and this weeks Links à la Mode brings a touch of much needed frivolity as we crawl into the second month of a new decade. Idiosyncratic Style takes Scooby Doo’s Velma as her style inspiration, Dirty Hems is inspired by dolls houses and Ode to Awe shows off her leopard print nails. Want something for nothing? A few Goody Gumdrops has an Aspinall of London bag to giveaway and Retro Chick (that’s me!) has 2 Valentine goodie bags to giveaway worth over £100 each. We’ve also got some great designer interviews and some practical advice.

On a more sober note there’s some timely tips from Sway, Sway, Sway! on how you can continue to donate to Haiti without getting scammed, Shoe Daydreams discusses Tanya Golds “Why I hate Fashion” article and Ventures of Jenn shares her opinions on the body image debate.

Bring on February!

While I wasn't really too impressed by the look & feel of OneStopPlus, a premier online plus-size fashion emporium, I did just find out that one of their fashion experts, Nancy LeWinter, is a former Vogue editor!

This resulted in me taking another look. Hmm, a lot of the styles seemed to suffer from the plus size curse of appearing a bit, dare I say it, matronly. Lots of looks that would get a designer kicked off "Project Runway" in a heartbeat!

But I did manage to find a quite few cute pieces under New Arrivals, which gives me hope that they're only going to improve.
Overall, worth looking at, particularly some of their newer stock! But the sad state of plus size fashion is just not improving fast enough, which shocks me, considering the potential market! I think the key is that it's all "potential" - how many plus sized women do you know love to shop for clothing? So many just want to hide in bland, unflattering clothes! First we need to change attitudes, and the market will come ;)

Studded Suede Backpack

Studded Suede BackpackI very much considered getting a cute backpack to stuff my netbook and giant camera in for NY Fashion Week, but the only one I found that was remotely fashionable for less than $500 was still $300 and had super thin shoulder straps that would surely dig into my skin. Well, here's a new one you can pre-order at Nine West for $159.

Elastic Back Over the Knee Boots

Elastic Back Over the Knee BootsMy suede over the knee boots are a bit on the shapeless side, I really want a pair that's stretchy, so it will fit my tiny calves and show off their shape! The best I've come across so far are these elastic back Stuart Weitzman boots I covet, anyone know where I can find in a 6.5? And on sale? Buy at Bloomingdale's for $535.

My Fashion Challenger: Day One

As you may have read, I'm challenging myself to really step up my day-to-day wardrobe! Well, today was the first day of said challenge and, as you can see, I'm off to a very mediocre start >.< I did manage to get up the courage to wear my Rodarte for Target lace tights to work, where you see pantyhose more often than anything else. But my mind kept telling me I needed the tights to be the showcase of the outfit, thus a complete lack of accessories. Looking at these pictures, I could have totally thrown on my bright pink scarf for a more interesting look. Do any of you have suggestions on how I could have improved my ensemble? Does standing like Wonder Woman count as part of my ensemble, cause I'm rocking that!

Even though it's not up to my standards, everyone here in DC has told me how cute I look, ahaha. It's hard to push yourself in such an un-fashion forward environment, but I'll get there with your help!

While too late, when I got home I forced myself to put on some accessories so I could see how unpainful it was! Looky, it's practically a last minute redemption!

Oversized Bow Clip

Oversized Bow ClipAlas, exactly what I was looking for LAST season, here is a giant bow you can clip onto your hair. It is really cute and only $32 at Lulu*s...

Christian Siriano for Payless

Christian Siriano for PaylessPictures of Christian Siriano's next collection of shoes for Payless have leaked online! What do you ladies think? While I adore the shape (very Alexander McQueen lobster claw shoe, but I believe these were in his fashion show, which was before McQueen's), I feel like they've gotten overly embellished. Let the unique silhouette stand on its own, Christian! They'll be $80 each, and I would def buy the first one if it came in black or grey!

Zip Front Leather Shorts

Zip Front Leather ShortsI've it before and I'll say it again, leather shorts are so hot right now! I'm not sure how I feel about this minimal pair, but they're on sale for just $48 at Asos!

Grecian Style Cocktail Dress

Grecian Style Cocktail DressI have an addiction to cocktail dresses!!! This amazing frock by Paul & Joe Sister is super sexy and would be a great buy for spring. Buy at StleBop for $190.

A Fashion Education: Rodarte

I like to discuss up and coming designers, but it never ceases to amaze me how many DC locals have never heard of brands I consider established! I find it tres frustrating when I'm discussing fashion with a friend or co-worker and they get confused once I go beyond Prada, Chanel or Marc Jacobs (not that there's anything wrong with those fab brands)! So I'm starting a new series, A Fashion Education, in the hopes that people will become more familiar with "consumer-unfriendly" brands.
First up is Rodarte. Designed by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, it's possibly my favorite label. Coming into existence in 2005, they have since won the 2008 CFDA Swarovski Emerging Womenswear Designer award, the 2008 Swiss Textiles Award, and a passionate fan base, including Anna Wintour, Natalie Portman, Chloë Sevigny and many more.
While their look is certainly recognizable, with almost incomprehensible detailing and romantically draped chiffon contrasted with deconstructed, tough accents, the label is constantly innovative and driving many of the fashion trends you see today. So, no you can't afford a wardrobe of their collections (I wish!), but you can find inspiration.

The spring '10 collection was a futuristic tribal mix, with touches of goth. Inspired by Death Valley, it was about how someone could "be scarred and still beautiful."

You may know the name from their Target collaboration, which sold out all over NYC. Here in DC, it wasn't quite as popular, so if you're desperately looking for pieces on eBay you should have me check first! If you want the real deal, try Opening Ceremony or a trip to NYC!

I'm wondering if I can sharpie on those arm tattoos for NY Fashion Week...

My Fashion Challenge

I previously wrote about a sorority who sent out dress code regulations, such as no American Apparel denim leggings. While the concept was initially horrifying to me, I admit I do sometimes need a Mean Girl to force me to step up wardrobe choices and tell me I can't sit at their table during lunch.
So in order to rejuvenate my style and force me to be a little more fashion forward in my day to day life, I've come up with the following rules:

  • Do not wear the same pair of trousers to work twice a week
  • Before you leave the house put ON one accessory
  • Wear non-black shoes at least once per week
  • Wear color and/or print top & bottom combo at least once per week
  • Wear a skirt or dress at least once per week
  • Wear a multi-layered ensemble (not just top and cardigan!) once every other week
  • Try dressing down a cocktail dress at least once a month
  • Planning your outfits the night before is better than pretending you don't sleep in and throwing on whatever's closest each morning
  • Don't be afraid to stand out!!
The will be surprisingly difficult for me, particularly at work! Most people here (here is both DC AND my office) dress tres conservatively, you pretty much can't buy anything at Banana Republic or J. Crew without five others wearing the same thing. But looking fashionable does not mean you look unprofessional, and I need to get that through my head!

So I plan to start posting my outfits on Lucky Style Spotter and occasionally here too - you all have to hold me accountable! Any of you have your own rules to suggest or plan to follow yourself?

Strappy Back Tee

The thick straps across the back of this Elizabeth and James tee kind of remind me of the the straps on a bullet proof-vest. The sharp geometric shapes created by the straps definitely create a striking contrast to the loose, casual fit of the rest of the tee. Buy it at Tobi for $225.

Silk Stud Print Trench

Silk Stud Print TrenchMaybe not the warmest of coats, but a silk trench is great for the later months of spring! This Alexander Wang one has the coolest stud print and is on sale at Opening Ceremony for $348, originally $695.

Embossed Suede Bag

Embossed Suede BagOoooh, this Rebecca Minkoff crossbody bag is another great buy for fashion bloggers at NY Fashion Week! Or really just any career girl with a great sense of fashion. Buy at Bluefly for the sale price of $297.

Chanel Temporary Tattoos

If you were coveting the tattoos shown on the Spring/Summer runway, you're in luck. The temporary tattoos will launch Feb. 1, 2010 to Chanel boutiques. Each tattoo is a Peter Phillips drawing and the package of 25 tattoos will run approximately $75.00. Call your Chanel rep to get on the waiting list - these are too beautiful to not get snatched up! Though I wonder how they they are applied...and well they stay on...

Oversized Denim Shirt

Oversized Denim ShirtAnother trend for spring is lots and lots of denim. Not really my thing, a bit too "country" for my taste, but this denim shirt does look amazing soft and comfy! Buy at Intermix for $158.

Fashion Rules

A story recently broke on Fashionista about a sorority present sending out a long list of dress code requirements. Some of the highlights would have to be:

— Denim leggings are appropriate as long as it’s done right: aka, not from American Apparel and worn with chic, cool, chunky boots over them and a longer top.

-Accessories: I expect EVERYONE to be wearing accessories. This is an important part of every outfit and can make or break many ensembles.

-I'm not saying you have to be wearing the Harry Winston wreath for me to like it, but I am saying I will not tolerate any gross plastic shizzz... I love things on wrists and I demand earrings if your ears are pierced.

— No satin dresses. No one looks good in satin dresses unless it’s from Betsey Johnson or Dolce & Gabbana, you weigh less than 130 pounds, have three pairs of Spanx on and it’s New Years Eve.

— Booties ok if you can pull them off, aka probably not.
Like many of you, I was pretty horrified by this. Personal style is what really invigorates the fashion industry, not a fashion dictatorship!

But then I thought... hey I could use my own fashion drill sergeant. There are so many days where I don't push myself, where I try to kid myself into believing that I'm going for minimal but I'm really just being lazy. Maybe I need someone to yell at me to change up my earrings, which I shamefully admit to you now have been the same for the past six months.

No, I'm not advocating the clone-generating extent of the letter, but wouldn't it be a fun experiment to have a friend dictate your wardrobe choices for a week? Standby for a follow up post, because I am SO doing that for NY Fashion Week!

Pleated Tailored Sweatpants

Pleated Tailored SweatpantsSome people think high end sweatpants will be in for spring. Someone needs to explain to Alexander Wang that no one wants to buy $300 sweats in this economy! Well, if you do want to rock the look, this pair at least has a fly and pockets up top, making it more wearable out of the house. It will cost you $132 at Oak... I would actually buy these if they weren't pleated!

The Topless Bikini

The Topless BikiniReally, this is more of a monokini, but that's really besides the point, isn't it? I imagine this will be all the rage in Vegas and Miami, would you consider wearing it? It comes with a detachable bandeau top, making it wearable in a more family friendly environment as well. Buy at Victoria's Secret for $68.

Silk Maxi Skirt

Silk Maxi SkirtHere's another silken maxi skirt for those of you interested in rocking the look, this one relatively affordable! Of course, that means it's almost sold out, so quick to TopShop to purchase for $100!

Zip Back Wedge Booties

Zip Back Wedge BootiesI'm not huge on the open toe version of these Jeffery Campbell booties, but these zip back ones are so cute! Back in stock (for now) at Nasty Gal, you can pre-order for $178.

Lace Naked Dress

Lace Naked DressI really like this large, circular lace pattern! And, if paired with a nude slip like shown, very naughty, perfect for a Valentine's Day date! Of course, it's a super expensive $720 at SHE Boutique, but I still wanted to share! Especially since the designer, Samantha Sleeper, might possibly be worth watching ;)

Crazy Awesome Wire Eye Mask

Can you tell by the title that I love these? wire, studs, chains; this mask has all the hardwear you could ever want. Curse me for wearing glasses! I always have to miss out on the fun eye stuff. I insist that some fashion blogger out there purchase these and wear them to fashion week. Get them for $75 from It's Not Me.

Giant Comfy Sweater Hoodie

Giant Comfy Sweater HoodieDoesn't this sweater look deliciously warm and cozy? I would love to roam the cold winter days ensconced in its warm embrace, but I'm afraid that if you're not model-skinny, or are wearing, you know...pants, that it might end up looking overly bulky. What do you think? You can buy it at pixiemarket for $156.

Howl Tee

I probably have at least one moment daily where I feel like this. Buy this Beatrice Boyle tee for $105.70 at Browns and let it do the screaming for you! RAWR!
