Suck What In: Small Girl Reviews Spanx

There's no denying that I'm a petite person. At 5'1, with bird bones and a gym obsession, I felt a little weird trying to review my latest gift, Spanx. But, hey, if Lindsey Lohan wears them to an awards show, really anyone can have some benefit, right?
So I threw on my most unforgiving dress and took some snaps. No sucking in (an urge every women has when a camera is pointed at her), just me au natural! Even though I am small, I must say it's a bit unnerving posting these pictures for all to see :O So let's see what Spanx does...
Hey, I'm suddenly more camera ready! From the front the difference is pretty small (though definitely there), but from the side my lower tummy definitely looks nice and flat! So no matter what your size, it looks like Spanx can smooth you out!

But I know what you really want to know: Yes, there is a hole in the bottom for going to the bathroom ;)

PS Why is my relaxed face so angry looking?? Should I widen the space btwn my eyebrows, I read somewhere that may help.

Shopping My Closet: Silk Purple Blouse

Busy day today :O
I've mentioned it before, but since I've reigned in my shopping I'm really going to try to work on shopping my own closet! Most of what I'm wearing here you've seen before: Twinkle skirt, Cole Haan heels, Rachel Leigh necklace, Splendid tank. With the exception of the great Michelle watch that was gifted to me, and my Ann Taylor blouse! Oh, and my dad's vintage Rayban's - tres chic, no?I still have a strange fear of button down tops. Yet I'm obsessed with cardigans, which I wear almost daily! Instead of buying new sweaters, I need to remember that a blouse worn open has the exact same look. This almost doubles my top layering options for free, hooray! It's always so very important to consider the various ways you can wear a piece of clothing before you buy it... or toss it out!
Here I am in classic watch model pose, I should do it professionally, don't you think?

Willow Sequin Jacket

DRAAAAMA! This jacket looks stuffy and fun at the same time. I am in love with the pink-nude color. If I randomly had $2,000+ to blow at Net-a-Porter, I'd consider this.

Saddleback Leather

I was gifted an amazing Saddleback Leather satchel, and I have to say it's probably my most favorite present ever!! Exactly what I imagine Indiana Jones would carry, it easily fits my netbook and converts to a backpack!! The satchels run from $275 to $335, depending on the size, but there are other items from wallets to overnight bags to look at too! They feel like they should be sold at J. Peterman, don't you think?

Military Button Down

Military Button DownIf you're strapped for cash, here's a tip for saving a couple dollars! Instead of buying a currently so chic military field jacket for fall, how about a button down that you can layer over you outfits instead?? This one is on extra sale of Bluefly for just $37!

I've noticed a few belt bags in editorials and street style shoot - new upcoming trend? Most look like pouches attached to an actual belt, but this one is dangerously close to fanny pack territory. Buy at Free People for $148.

Shopaholic Rehab: It Begins

Hi, my name is Vyqué and I'm a shopaholic.

Hi Vyqué

Previously mentioned on IFB, being a fashion blogger is rough on your bank account. Looking daily at fabulous items you could add to you closet is quite a temptation! In addition, you feel a constant pressure to look cute, have the latest it shoes, go to NYC twice a year for fashion week, and discuss your fabulous purchases with your readers.

About five years ago I started blogging about shopping. I paid my credit card off every month and had no debt. Well today my balance is neared maxed out and I'm gonna have to intervention myself. Don't get me wrong, I'm no "confessions of a Shopaholic." I have just one credit card, I pay way more the minimum every month, my credit score is surprisingly high, I do not throw away my bills in hopes they disappear. BUT maybe that's my problem - I'm in denial because my situation is just not desperate enough. Even though I now have to save up for a wedding, I still spend like an irresponsible teenager. So here I am, making a public commitment to pay off my card in one year. At least once a week I will report on my progress, my relapses and my successes. I will unsubscribe to all the various sample sale site newsletter where I impulsively buy items "because look how much they're on sale! I lose money if I don't buy them!" I will make a list of items I actually need and only buy those. I will still treat myself on occasion, but keep myself in check. I will create an account on Mint.com and follow a budget. And instead of daydreaming about winning the lottery, I will daydream about the day I pay off my credit card completely and fiscally grow up.

I will need lots of positive reinforcement as the year goes on; I know it's annoying to reward someone for acting the way they should have been already but bear with me! Eventually my habits will change!

Credit Card: 9.85% paid off

Faux Fur Gilet

Faux Fur GiletFur gilets are almost always chic for fall. I used to dismiss then as too "boho," but I'm looking at them in a new light and have realized that I can style them however I'd like for different feels. Buy this one at ModCloth $65.

Sequin Hobo

It's so... SHINY!!! Buy at Lori's for $84.

My Style Challenge: Ann Taylor's Little Black Dress Campaign

When I was invited to participate in Society Stylist's Ann Taylor Little Black Dress Campaign, I was immediately thrilled, followed by a sense of dread. My daily pressure to style cute outfits is already high, but this take it to a whole other level!

So how to take a classic LBD and style it to make it "me." I've been on a personal journey this year to understand my own style and elevate it to new heights. So far I've discovered that accessories are your friend, color is best when paired with more color and that it never hurts to look a little badass. You can read all about my thought process into how I put my outfit together at Society Stylist. This is my official picture! My outfits consists of:
Little Black Dress: Courtesy of Ann Taylor
Denim Vest: 1970’s Eddie Bauer
Multi-chain Necklace: Baker’s
Green Ring: Yosca
Shoes: Camilla Skovgaard
Sunglasses: Quay Eyewear
Love this off-kilter shot, but those blasted tourists in the background kept climbing up and down the Exorcist stairs. Yes, these are the scary three stories of steps that are fallen down in the climax of the movie, right here in Georgetown - a mecca of history, dining and great fashion in Washington, DC. I was surprised at how many people were there taking pictures!
Here's a shot from the top down, can I just say how scary it is to walk up and down these in Camilla Skovgaard platforms?

I had such a blast doing this, and I think I put together a fun outfit that really shows my personal style! And get 20% off your next purchase with Ann Taylor!

Fall Trend: Laceless Oxfords

If you're into the menswear shoes, but want a slightly unique twist, why not get some laceless oxfords? It's like work appropriate slippers, hooray! I went around and found a few good options in various price ranges for you, check it out! Apparently this is actually a fall trend for both women AND men, so I threw in a few mens' shoes at the end for my many hoards of male readers.

Leather Panel Jacket

I love leather panel pieces - they provide the slouchy leather look for the most affordable price! Of course, that doesn't mean it's cheap, this jacket is $304 at Need Supply. Want soooo bad, sigh.

World Links Necklace

By posting this necklace I immediately got a mash-up of "It's a Small World" and "We are the World" stuck in my head. Available in silver or gold (coloring, not actual metal), you can buy at Uncommon Goods for $60.

Etsy Store: r e d d o l l

In my continuing quest to find the best Etsy stores out there, I came across this gem! r e d d o l l by Tatyana Merenyuk has beautifully constructed pieces in fluid, feminine shapes. She works with lots of luxe fabrics, silk organza and chiffons, and has a sweet, romantic aesthetic that manages to be classic and unexpected at the same time!
The designer grew up in Ukraine, had been living in Chicago for awhile, but is relocating to NYC to pursue her dream, mayhaps we've discovered the next big designer??? I can't help but think of Leanna Marshall, I hope Tatyana tries out for the next season of "Project Runway" and I think the judges would be crazy not to immediately see her talent!

I always love a blend of style and technology, and I feel like this laptop is a great example of that!

Designer to Watch: Alexandre Vauthier

After stints at Thierry Mugler and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexandre Vauthier launched his own line in 2009 and quickly became a rising star in the Paris couture scene!

Looks from his Spring 2009, Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 collections
Favored by celebs Rhianna and Madonna, he's know for glamorous edge, a futuristic feel with exaggerated shoulders and plunging necklines. He pairs extravagant details with clean lines for amazing, in-your-face looks suitable of glamazons such as Grace Jones or Joan Collins.
Alexandre Vauthier fall 2010Some outstanding looks from his Fall 2010 collection
I must say I'm curious as to what he'll do next! He did show more diversity for Fall 2010, with some flowy silhouettes and draping. Big shoulders are dwindling quickly, so he'll need to continue to expand his vision in order to continue pleasing the oh-so-fickle fashion crowds.

Fox Print Top

Fox Print TopDrapey, box tops don't usually look good on my, but this one is tempting because I adore the print so much! Aww, wittle foxys, so cute! Buy at Ruche for just $30.

A truly spiky heel

These Sam Edelman pumps are seriously bad-ass. Just be sure to look behind if you have to step backward while wearing these! Creative Inspiration: Dress A Day

A coworker of mine (shout out to Caryn!) tipped me to the blog New Dress A Day. Basically, poor Marisa hit 30 and lost her job around the same time, and felt like she was in a rut, but instead of sitting around feeling sorry for herself, she came up with a plan. Inspired by the movie Julie and Julia, she decided she would create one new dress every day for a year. Each dress would be created from garments found at flea markets, vintage shops, and garage sales. Her budget? $1 per day. That's it. No other clothes shopping than that for an entire year.

This dress was inspired from a dress worn by Blair on Gossip Girl (see below)

Marisa's blog is a day by day chronicling of each dress, (or, on occasion shirt) depicting the garment in its original state, and then the new dress she made from it. She also includes a description of how she got from point A to point B and oftentimes a real world example of her inspiration.

I find her whole endeavor very inspiring, and am really impressed with her creativity and commitment. She is already up to day 240, and really seems to be having a blast with the project. I wouldn't be at all surprised if at the end of all this she ends up with great opportunities to make money doing the thing she loves. What do you think? Crazy? Inspired? Or both?

Velvet Cage Wedges: Now & Later

Ooo, what a great pair of shoes, which are a super affordable $44 at PlasticLand and vegan-friendly!

So how to wear them now?Finding the perfect balance between global and feminine, why not pair with a full skirt with silver dome beading and a pretty ruffled top? A frame bag and straw cloche makes it a look even Blair Waldorf would approve of.
When the trees start turning pretty colors, the shoes would look super fab paired with some opaque tights. Jazz up a basic sweater dress by layering a fur gilet over it, and then top it all off with a great leopard print belt!

Silk Equestrian Pants

Silk Equestrian PantsThis feels like the fall pants shape, but I have trouble pinning it down to a word like harem or skinny or whatnot. It's kinda a mix of many things, making it quite flattering! Buy this pair at Lulu*s for $52.

Statement Pearl Bib Necklace

Statement Pearl Bib NecklaceBlargh, technical issues all morning!! Here is a breath taking statement necklace by Vera Wang for all of us to admire and wish we could afford! Buy at Neiman Marcus for $650 if you can afford!

Coral Chiffon Dress

I know you're excited about upcoming fall fashion, but don't forget to take advantage of some of the great summer clearance sales! This floaty Philosophy Di Alberta Ferretti dress is super pretty and perfect for late summer weddings. Originally a whooping $572, it's now on sale at Flannels for a more reasonable $195.

My Style Challenge: Girly Nautical

Sometimes I have trouble envisioning unexpected pairings of clothing, which is why I often turn to magazines to get inspired. I pulled this look almost directly out of a Lucky Magazine! Seriously, I saw this exact skirt by Sugar Lips paired with a Breton striped top and ran off to get. I paired with my trusty Guess? nautical strip top and threw a purple top over my shoulders - something I haven't done since my Catholic school girl days!

Overall the look is very girly prep, not my usual style but I was really happy with the results. I've been experimenting with more heavily accessorized looks so this was a good reminder that you can look clean and remain chic as well!
