Erin Fetherston for Juicy Couture Debut

When the news first broke that Erin Fetherston was going to be designing for Juicy Couture, I admit I was very confused. While they actually have some pretty cute clothing, Juicy always brings to mind hideous velour track suits worn by tweens and tacky, label-covered purses that are barely a step up from Ed Hardy.

The label was in particular need of an update recently, as founders Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy left (though still act as creative consultants) and stores stopped carrying their items due to low sales. But Erin Fetherston, who's known for beautiful, feminine clothing, seemed like a bit of a strange fit for a LA casual brand.

Well, this odd pairing worked! The NY Times recently got a look at her first collection, which will be in stores Nov 15. And well, wow! Fetherston took velour and turned into a chic cocktail frock - "This is my take on the track jacket for evening and cocktail." It's like some sort of "Project Runway" challenge where you have to take inspiration a hideous iconic fashion item. Tim Gunn would definitely say she made it work.

No other pictures yet, but the reviews on the other pieces are just as positive. Great art deco styled jackets, embellished tops, and long champagne gowns, oh my! The prices range from about $158 to $378 - not bad considering pieces from her eponymous line would be 3-4 times that!

Net Overlay Skirt

Oh my, this skirt is selling out quick! It has a great mesh net overlay and is only $40 at 80's Purple!

Faux Shearling Bowler

Shearling is chic, but even more fun when unexpected! An off shot of my fur purse obsession (I just like saying that phrase), here's a cute faux shearing bag! It's a bowler, but it has a detachable shoulder strap, making it muuuch easier to carry around, particularly over heavy coats. Buy at ASOS for just $38!

NOVA Fashion Week - Natalia Sanz

I recently attend a couple shows for NOVA Fashion Week - a fun fashion event in the DC region. First up was local designer, Natalia Sanz.Known for a sleek and modern aesthetic, her Spring 2011 collection was inspired by Grecian clothing and statues. Lots of pretty draping, the clothing was extremely wearable and felt very classic. While there were chic, subtle details in the pieces, the overall presentation lacked a sense of showmanship. If you've been watching "Project Runway" this season, you've heard about the importance of styling. Over and over again. Well, Natalia needs to take a lesson, because, even though the clothing was great, I left feeling underwhelmed. Bring the Wow Factor (said with Heidi accent), I know you can!

Check out all my pictures here:

Guest Post for DC Goodwill

I recently did a guest post for DC Goodwill Fashionista giving tips on thrift shopping. Check it out for a rare chance to see me sportin' the specs and leave comments!

Faded Camo Tee

I can't decide, do you think camo hit its peak already, and the trend is dropping off? Either way, this grey camo tee would look great paired with some skinny black pants, a blazer and some platform boots! Buy at Tobi for just $35.

Platform Claw Boots

Everyone loves my shoes today, so I figured I would share them with all of you! Especially since they're sold out everywhere except Free People, who just got a bunch in stock! In case you're wondering, they're very comfy to walk in.

Labradorite Ring

Labradorite is an interesting type of gemstone, usually having an iridescent blue glisten. Can't tell if this picture just doesn't accurately show said glisten in this photo or if it just doesn't have it - don't you hate that about online shopping? I do like the mix of gold and silver though! If you buy at Piperlime for $88, be sure to leave a review letting us know how the stone looks!

Cropped Cuffed Sweater

The boxy, cropped silhouette is actually easier to rock than you think, even for curvier girl like me. Just be sure to balance it with a formfitting lower half! This Tulle sweater has great oversized cuff and only costs $45!

Shearling Collar Army Jacket

J.Crew has improved upon the oh so popular army fatigue jacket by adding a detachable shearling collar! I totally love this versitile piece, that can be worn from 50 - 70 degrees, I wish I could afford its $378 price tag!

Feather Print Blouse

I love unusual takes on prints, like this silk blouse! It has a light, airy feel, but the coloring makes it perfect for fall, making this piece rather seasonless. Buy at Anne Klein for $225.

Denim Panel Leggings

I've always liked leather panel leggings, but these are the first denim panel ones I've seen! I wouldn't expect to like them, but I do, there's something unique and slightly edgy about them. Buy at Lulu's for $38.

Doggie Faux Fur Coat

Doggie Faux Fur CoatI was perusing some of the new items at Revolve Clothing and this faux fur coat for dogs made me bust out laughing! So of course I had to share with all of you. Buy for $75, I wonder if Kyoko would wear it...

Collarless Felt Blazer

Collarless Felt BlazerThis collarless blazer by Alexander Wang is a fab example of modern minimalism! It's amazing how it catches your eye without being fussy, so chic. But pricey as well, will cost you $650 at Nordstrom!

Scuba Dress

Scuba DressI'm not usually drawn to surfer athletic style clothing, but we all know I can't resist a fabulous back! A fun twist on the LBD, buy at Nasty Gal for $130.

Wool Equestrian Hat

I'm contemplating buying this equestrian style cap by Minimarket. I have an intense love of hats (the jauntier, the better), but refuse to spend more than $50 on them. This one is on sale for $39 at theOutnet.com and therefore falls into my doesn't count as spending money range. Of course, I'm supposed to be getting better and remembering that doing that a few times a month adds up considerably - maybe it's time for another Shopaholic Rehab post? Sigh... anyone out there need a present idea for me??

The Impact of Michelle Obama's Fashion Choices

There was no doubt in this DC native's mind that Michelle Obama's wardrobe had a huge impact on the average woman. For the first time in my life people around me we discussing designers that DIDN'T have gowns on award show red carpets. Because most women do not read British Vogue, or subscribe to 50 different fashion blogs or can drop into Barneys to see what's new. Most of the women I know get their fashion information from the following: what celebrities are wearing to a major event, such as a movie premiere; what's mentioned in best selling chick lit, IE The Devil Wears Prada or Gossip Girl, what's shown in the uber-mainstream fashion rags like People Style Watch, and what has a more affordable diffusion line, with even more affordable accessories, particularly sunglasses. Usually a combination of at least two of the above is required to really permeate the minds of the non-fashion obsessed, leaving the obvious such as Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana... all great fashion houses, but still a very limited view of all that sparkles in our closet!

Most of my friends will say they don't want to hear about any great high-end designers, that if they cannot afford said designer clothing than they do not want to hear about it. This makes me ANGRAY as how else will you be able to spot more affordable, upcoming trends to buy? No, I cannot go out and buy myself some ChloƩ camel pants, but maybe I'll be able to find something similar at J.Crew! But I digress, I just had to rant for a second.

Michelle Obama, on the other hand, has made a huge impact in the overall fashion sense of America. Wearing Isabel toledo and Jason Wu for the Inauguration was huge, but I'd also like to note that many of her day to day wardrobe choices ripple through the consumer's mind like nothing else. Outside NYC fashionistas, I knew of two people (myself and Kathy) who knew who Thakoon was before she rocked one of his floral frocks.

In fact, the Harvard Business Review recently had an analyst assess the monetary value Michelle Obama has on fashion labels she wears out in public. How the First Lady Moves Markets is a fascinating read, estimating that value of a single public appearance in a label a whopping $14 million! People consider her to be knowledgeable in fashion, yet totally relatable as well.

As numbers like this come out, perhaps more and more designers will recognize the value of a DC presence? I know she's probably not strolling through Georgetown, looking for items to update her wardrobe with. Most likely she gets flocks of clothing sent over for her to pick and choose from without stepping foot outside. But don't forget about the subtle nature of brand awareness - maybe her motorcade will drive by the latest Michael Kors boutique (just opened in DC!) and she'll go, "Hmm, I wonder what new items are in, I should check!" And definitely don't underestimate the power of the hundreds of Michelle Obama wanna be's, which are highly concentrated in a 50 mile radius around the White House!

Shecky's Girls Night Out Fall 2010

I went to DC's Shecky's Girls' Night Out last week! When I first started covering this event a year or two ago, I admit I wasn't 100% sold on it. It was a bit on the overcrowded side and the vendors didn't impress me too much. But it's been consistently getting better, and I would definitely recommend going for cocktails, good times with friends, and some shopping scores!
There's a new Beer Pairing Experience, where you find out what cheeses taste best with what beers! It looked really fun, but too bad I don't eat cheese! These friends had been going for years now! It was a cute tradition, my girlfriends and I need something similar! The real win of the night was discovering a Baltimore-based high-end boutique called Form. There I finally gave into temptation and bought something - and AMAZING Dolce & Gabbanna wool coat for more than 90% off! I need to get it hemmed up, but I can't wait to share with you guys! Not only did the boutique carry labels like Chanel and Diane von Furstenburg, but newer brands like Mike Gonzalez. Who know there was such a fashion forward boutique in the area???

Chain Strap Heel

These Rock & Republic shoes are so bad ass - amazing was a chain strap can do to a pair of stilettos! Buy at Bluefly for $93 in black of pewter.

My Style Challenge: Leopard Print Blazer

I recently was unable to resist a super cute leopard print jacket at H&M. With its shoulder pads, draped front and slim, cropped shape it was the rarely perfect combination of slouchy and flattering on my petite frame! I had never worn animal print to work before (I'm a wuss), but I felt like this could easily be apart of a fashion forward yet office appropriate outfit.

I decided to wear a pink tank since I love prints and brights together (easier than the art of mixing prints). I put on my black pencil skirt to balance that out, but, since I was also wearing black tights, I knew I needed interesting shoes to keep my bottom half from looking boring! I already had color, so I decided to rock my cream cage sandals - love them with black tights!

I'm quite pleased with how the look turned out! Mixing blacks and browns, wearing animal print to work - I stepped out of my comfort zone in more ways than one!

I'm wearing:
Leopard blazer by H&M
Knit pencil skirt by Gap
Pink Tank by Splendid
Camel coat by Banana Republic
Cream cage sandals from Yes Style
Jewelry stolen from my mom's jewelry box

I stole all the jewelry from my mom - I really need more silver necklaces like those to layer together. And, seriously, how fabulous is this jeweled cocktail ring?? And the band is actually a mood ring, it totally changes colors! My mom has the best taste in jewelry - ooo, I just realized she totally needs something by Wendy B for the holidays!
Of course Kyoko looooooves to photo bomb my shots, but hates to pose for the camera when I want her to! So cute and fluffy that all is forgiven though!

Lust for Less: Garter Skirt

Lingerie as a trend has died down, but I still very much like the look of skirts with garters! This suede one is fab - simple and sexy! But at $400 at Madison LA, way out of my price range!
This is a great, much more affordable option! Pre-order it for $80 at ModCloth now!

Lace Blouse

Lace is always chic for fall, and a great way to add a little romance to an outfit! Buy this floral cobweb one for $208 at Ron Herman in black or white.

Bright Cut Away Back Top

Sometimes you need a little color to brighten up a cold morning! Since I love all things purple, here's a pretty purple top by Boulee. The cutaway back is chic for a night out, but you could wear it under a blazer for an office to happy hour look! Buy at Couture Candy for $240.

Coach Pet Returns

When I got my adorable puppy one of the first places I looked for pet accessories was Coach. But I was shocked and dismayed to find that they no longer carried chic items for the fashionable animal lover! Well, I guess many other people felt the same way (no surprise!) as Coach Pet is back! Just in time for the holiday season - who wants to get this dog mom a present??

LiBrow

LiBrowI had once heard a tip that women could use Rogain to regrow over plucked eyebrows, which I thought was genius! But if you want the Brooke Shields look and something specifically formulated for the purpose of filling out your eyebrows, you can buy LiBrow at Amazon for $100. Pricey, but the reviews are overwhelmingly positive!

Faux Fur & Knit Wrap Coat

This WiNK coat has a great faux fur wrap shape AND cable knit sleeves, giving it a layered appearance. Buy for $288.

Funnel Neck Dress

This dress has a funnel neck that looks great down, but can also be worn as a hood! That in addition to the cut out elbows and thumb holes in the sleeves makes this something I would probably wear once a week. Now if only I could afford the $235 price tag at Acrimony.

Chevron Necklace

"Chevron n. A badge or insignia consisting of stripes meeting at an angle, worn on the sleeve of a military or police uniform to indicate rank." The more you know! So I guess this necklace is kinda military, but in a super subtle way - fun! Buy at Edit New York for $315.

Cropped Tweed Blazer

Cropped Tweed BlazerThis Kate Spade blazer is perfect for fall's ladylike styling! You can buy for $445 at Bloomingdale's, or wait until I find something similar but more affordable as I am now on the hunt!

La Catrina Shredded Tee

Dios mio, es Dia de los Muertos tee! Perfect for when you want to get festive without wearing a costume, buy at Urban Outfitters for $32.

Skinny Fleece Sweats

Skinny Fleece SweatsContinuing with my love of all pants skinny, here are some cute fleece sweatpants with skinny legs! I totally want these for my post dance and gym outings, but they're pricey for clothing I wouldn't wear out. Hmmm, are people still wear sweatpants with heels? Buy at ShopBop for $87.

Brown Fur Purse

I've mentioned it before, but I am getting obsessed with the furry purse trend! How else will I be able to say, "Let me look in my fur purse" or "I lost my phone somewhere in my fur purse"?? HOW, I ask you, HOW?!? This one is an affordable $78 at Lulu's.

H&M for Lanvin Image Leaked

Refinery 29 has shared a preview image from the Lanvin for H&M collection and I wanted to share with all of you! The models are Hannelore Knuts, Jane Schmitt, Tati Collitar, and Natasha Poly—all shot by awesome British fashion photographer David Sims.

Sequin Ikat Sweatshirt

Sequin Ikat SweatshirtCheck out this sequin embellished sweatshirt. I love how it's in an ikat style, tres boho glam, no? Buy at CUSP for $163. Now, will someone please tell me if I should list a sweatshirt as a sweater or a top? Maybe I'll just call it activewear and call it a day :P

Hooded Knit Blazer

I have been in the mood to buy more blazers lately! I'm really drawn to this hooded one by Haute Hippie - I love the look of layering a blazer over a hoodie but I find it's so bulky feeling. Well this solves that problem! But it's out of my price range at $495 at Nordstrom.

Lust for Less: Poofy Faux Fur Coat

So I've been looking around for fuzzy faux fur coats. I own a great vintage one, but it just doesn't feel shaggy enough! I found this uber fluffy one by Vena Cava:Vena Cava Faux Fur Shaggy CoatOriginally $700, it's on sale for $300 at Gargyle! But if you think that's still too expensive, I also saw this:Shaggy Faux Fur CoatAlso rocking a shaggy look, but a more affordable $98 at Nasty Gal.

Lucky Magazine is bringing us LUCKY SHOPS 2010, the ultimate shopping event. Now in its seventh year, LUCKY SHOPS has become the benchmark for all shopping events, bringing the pages of the magazine to life with a unique mix of established and up-and-coming designer brands at a variety of price points. I know, I totally copied & pasted from their press release, but to be honest, I can't disagree! When I went one year it was by far the best shopping event I'd ever attended and it still was. Man, AMEX really has the market cornered on sponsoring fashion events!

Leather Yoke Sheath Dress

Leather Yoke Sheath DressYou know I love leather, but it's hard to find pieces that are office appropriate. I thought about getting a faux leather dress at H&M over the weekend, but I knew I would never get to wear it since I'm either in work clothing or bumming around the house clothing. It's true, I have no life :O But I just found this sheath dress with a faux leather yoke - just a touch to edge up a wardrobe basic! Buy at Neiman Marcus for a not H&M price of $295.

Black Leather Hood

Black Leather HoodAlyssa loved the Katie Gallagher Spring 2011 presentation, and if you did too you can own this leather hood by her for just $782! Found at Oak, I'm happy to see that she's actually available online to the public, but why are so many fabulous up & coming designers so pricey? I know that just because they're not as established doesn't mean they aren't as high quality or worth it, but you'd think they'd be a little more affordable until everyone knew who they were!

Designer to Watch: Mike Gonzalez

I am just full of things I didn't know lately! Today it's that Mike Gonzalez, founder and former designer of Mike and Chris, has gone out on his own with a recently-launched eponymous label. If only his website worked correctly...But I luckily found pictures of his spring 2011 collection at Refinery 29! It's edgy tribal, with great color and prints, geometric cutouts and feminine, tailored silhouettes. He has a very modern take on the LA street culture that is a part of his inspiration, and everything is super wearable and easy to incorporate into a fashionista's wardrobe! You can shop his fall collection (which I believe was his first) at Revolve Clothing and Pink Mascara. Items range from $149 for a jersey tee to more than $850 for leather jackets.
