DC Leads Shopoholics List

A new study shows that DC leads the nation in average spending on fashion per month! I gotta wonder if my buying habits took us from #7 up to #1 ;)

Bundle.com took data from across the country, combining figures from the U.S. government, Citi, and other sources, between March 2010 and March 2011 to generate the list. Nationally shoppers spend an average of $142.08 on clothing and shoes, but those in Washington, DC spend a almost twice that amount at $263 each month. And right outside the city, Arlington, VA is number two at $254.58 per month.

This doesn't exactly surprise me - remember when I noted how DC had all the money so please give us things to buy? With a very stable local economy full of government workers, we definitely have the cashflow to fulfill our shopping cravings. I am surprised we spend so much on fashion, especially in comparison to other cities:

Average monthly spending on clothes, shoes and other wear:
  1. Washington, DC: $263
  2. Arlington, VA: $254.58
  3. Nashville, TN: $251.17
  4. Scottsdale, AZ: $243.17
  5. Dallas, TX: $228.58
  6. San Francisco, CA: $227.42
  7. San Jose, CA: $221.17
  8. Seattle, WA: $221.17
  9. Austin, TX: $213
  10. Bakersfield, CA: $201.50
No mention of Chicago, New York City or Los Angeles (11, 12 and 20 consecutively)!! I will continue to campaign for a full Barney's, though I have recently discovered that Manhattan doesn't have a Neiman Marcus and we do - crazy!

How much is your monthly shopping budget?
