Fall '11 Trend: Colorblocking

Fall 2011 Colorblocking

Apparently color blocking was chic for spring (I honestly didn't notice) and is continuing on to fall! So I created a little inspiration board with models and celebs and individual pieces to help you rock the look! Looking back I suppose I did do some colorblocking here and here before. Wow, lots of times, too many to keep linking back to! But I always considered colorblocking to be all in one piece, not putting separates in bold colors together - again, that's practically every day for me! But if you always pair a bright top with black pants, here are some tips to get you started:
  • The "least scary" way to colorblock is to pair the same color in different shades together (tonal colors), such as pink and red, lavender and plum, extra.
  • Pairing opposite (complementary colors) hues together is much bolder, but super fun. Think blue and orange or purple and yellow.
  • Choosing one super bright color and one less saturated color is a more subtle way to color block. Think hot pink and hunter green, neon yellow and plum.
For fall I recommend fall shades, such as eggplant, teal and the like!

Feathery Bird Top

Ooo, check out this silk Twinkle by Wenlan top, which has a cool bird print on the front and an even cooler feather print covering the back! Buy in white or black for $273.

Fuchsia Suede Wedges

I own a pair of great wedge booties that cut down in the front like this - you get the bootie silhouette and still elongate your legs for a double win!! I wish mine were hot pink like these Jeffery Campbell ones though! Buy at Nasty Gal for $168.

"Big Sexy" - Role Models or Overeater Enabling?

So I heard about a new TLC show, "Big Sexy." It's a reality tv show featuring plus size women, promoting "big girl" acceptance.

I am all about loving yourself for who you are, I really am. But I've also been told that being overweight can lead to heart problems, diabetes, stroke and worse. So I'm constantly torn between body acceptance and health promotion.

It comes down to: everyone is different. Pushing your body to an unnatural extreme will always be unhealthy, but that doesn't mean you can't naturally be plus size (or size 0) and 100% healthy! In fact, in 2009 a study showed that people who were slightly overweight lived longer than underweight, average weight or obese people!

But this doesn't remove the problem. Just as a naturally skinny model may inspire a girl to stop eating, a naturally big girl can inspire someone at a weight unhealthy for them to not bother exercising or eating less.

I think the best thing we can do is to stop promoting "size acceptance" and start promoting "health acceptance!"

A Fashion Education: Doo.Ri

Doo.Ri Chung graduated from Parsons in 1995, started selling her eponymous label in 2001, started showing on the runway in 2003 and won the coveted CFDA’s Swarovski Perry Ellis award for emerging talent in womenswear in 2006! Somehow known for both fluid draping and architectural details, she has a super loyal fan base (I count myself as one!) that's growing every day!

Some of her earlier looks from 2005-2007
I love her aestetic, which seems to mix a modern minimalism with a feminine grace that feels edgy and fresh. She often stays in a muted color palette, but somehow always makes her clothing pop.
More recent looks from 2008 - 2010
I got to meet her one fashion week, check out my Crafternoon Tea with Doo.Ri and Melissa Joy Manning post! She's super poised!! And I got a fuzzy under.ligne vest, which is her more affordable diffusion line.
Looks from her Fall '11 collection
Her fall '11 collection was certainly well received, particularly the macrame detailing that remind me of cobwebs or swirly smoke. Everything looks sophisticated yet comfortable... now if only I could afford it! You can shop Doo.Ri at ShopBop & Saks, and under.ligne has its own online store.

Menswear Vest Dress

This Leifsdottir wool cashmere vest dress is so chic and unique, and could probably do double time as a layering piece! Buy at Anthropologie for $248.

My Style Challenge: Leather Shorts

Hooray, I finally got myself a purty pair of leather shorts to have and hold and love forever and ever!!! Thanks Midtown Girl for pushing me over the edge! ;) But hmm, how do I wear them? I used my leather shorts inspiration board to, well, inspire me and...leather shorts styleHooray, my first summer to fall outfit of the year! Ok, it was a touch too hot for a jacket, but it sure looks good! I think the key with leather shorts is making sure you're not trying to look sexy. The shorts shouldn't be too tight, the top loosely tucked, and confidence is a must!I'm getting much better at accessorizing this year! See all my pretty jewelry? Hmm, probably should have rolled up my blouse sleeves, not big on them sticking out past my jacket cuffs.
I'm wearing: beautifous Gryhon leather shorts from theOutnet.com, leopard print blouse & earrings yoinked from my mom's closet, Elizabeth & James jacket my sister bought for me from TJ Maxx, ASOS field boots and armor ring, horizontal glass ring from Banana Republic, studded and chain bracelet from Juicy Couture, just studded bracelet from J. Crew, tiger bracelet from CUSP, P.A.M. vampire necklace, and Coach purse also a gift from my sister. Whew, now that I really accessorize it takes forever to write it all out!
I feel very animalistic in this outfit, RAWR!

Knit Loop Vest

It's starting to turn into layering weather and this reminds me of my awesome under.linge loop vest!! Pre-order this rag & bone one at Nordstrom for... holy moly, $495!

Ethnic Tile Bikini

Time for swimsuits to go on mega sale! This bikini has a great supportive top and awesome print! Best of all the top is down from $98 to just $19 and the bottoms down from $78 to just $10!!! A whole high quality bikini for less than $30 - unheard of!

Wool Gaucho Pants

I've been waiting for gaucho pants to make a comeback! Diane von Furstenberg showed these in her fall '11 collection and they're now available for $298.

Upcoming Trend: Baroque & Roll

Baroque & Roll

We first starting seeing this trend last year, with designers like Balmain and Cavalli showing luxe rock looks for fall 2010. Well for fall 2011 more designers like Jason Wu, Alexander McQueen and Anna Sui hopped on the Baroque & Roll train - a crazy mix of opulence (I has it), boho and rock that somehow works.

The recipe is quite easy: add in two cups of rich fabrics, such as velvet, brocade, tapestry or jacquard, add in a dash of shiny metallic (all of a sudden lamé doesn't seem so dated!), simmer until slim and slinky, sprinkle on a boho accessory or two and you're set! Think Versailles meets Mick Jagger. I think the trick is to be inspired by male style icons such as Jagger, Jimi Hendrix and Keith Richards - you'll look bad ass and somehow accidentally sexy instead of trying to be sexy.

Some Fall Essentials

Fall Essentials

As my September issues start arriving, I've been thinking about what fall essentials I need! I focusing on items that I and most average women don't already own, so no equestrian boots here!
  1. Jewel toned pants - Colored pants have made a sudden resurgence in the past few weeks, and colors like teal or eggplant are perfect for fall!
  2. Maxi skirt with slit - So zexy and fun, I've been seeing maxi skirts with slits all over for te past few months!
  3. A cape - Capes are just fall to me, look for ones that belt so you can keep your shape.
  4. Heeled loafers - I own some heeled oxfords but no loafers - obviously my closet needs a pair!
  5. Leather shorts - I just got my pair of leather shorts and I'm so thrilled with them! Wear them now with a tee and ballet flats, later with tights!
  6. Southwestern sweater - Frontier style inspired many designers for fall, and a cozy sweater to wrap yourself up in is always chic!

Fur Sleeve Top

Forget leather sleeves, for fall why not rock a muppet-esque furry sleeeved top! This Stolen Girlfriends Club one with faux fur sleeves certainly makes a statement. Buy at Pixie Market for $322.

Tiger Print Purse

My intense love affair with tiger print continues!!! This Matt & Nat bag is super cute, matches everything and is eco-friendly to boot! Buy at Last Call NM for $125, but if you buy now it's on extra sale for $94!

Tattoo Inspired Tee

Usually the phrase "tattoo inspired" makes to run screaming as I envision a hoard of Ed Hardy dbags fist pumping in unison. Yet somehow Christopher Kane has made it chic! But this tee for the sale price of $144 at Opening Ceremony.

My Style Challenge: Every Day

It's true that sometimes I put together an outfit with the sole intent of shooting outfit posts and pretty much nothing else. So I'm going to working on randomly deciding to snap pictures of what I wore to every day occurrences. This is my "I need to wear my work separates together in a new way" look. You've seen all these pieces before, but never together! So this is what I wore to work earlier in the week. I admit that there isn't anything really standout, but it's a great example of how a real woman who works and doesn't have unlimited shopping options or money can pull together a look
I'm wearing: Rachel Rachel Roy blue tank, LOFT skirt, red Zara pumps, Marc by Marc Jacobs blazer, Marc Jacobs belt, necklace from Last Call NM, Betsey Johnson earrings and sunglasses, sparkly leopard head ring courtesy of Pretty People Vintage.
You don't have to look rich and glamorous or rail thin and hipster chic to look good!

Cute Rain Gear

First an earthquake, now the east coast is being attacked by a hurricane! Here's a few cute rainy day pieces to make you day a little less miserable!

Slit Mini Maxi SKirt

Side slit skirts are currently tres chic, but this one is so breathtakingly unique!!! Buy at Acne for an expensive $380... I wonder how hard it would be to make something similar myself?

One Shoulder Wrap Dress

I try not to post items where only one size is left, but wrap dresses can be a bit more flexible and this one is so pretty!! Buy at Alice + Olivia for the sale price of $264 if you're a size 8 or close!

Striped Loose Knit Sweater

A loosely knit sweater is a season transition piece - love how this one has a few nautical-esque stripes! Buy at ModCloth an affordable $50.

Bow Rabbit Felt Hat

Bow Rabbit Felt HatSo I'm trying to convince my wedding guests to wear royal wedding style hats! Here's a great option, but alas it's a bit expensive, costing you $322 at Brown's.

Inspiration Board: Leather Shorts

Inspiration Board: Leather Shorts

I recently caved and got myself a great pair of leather shorts! But hmm, how should I style them? Taking my usual inspiration from personal style sites, celebrities and how stores showcase their own pieces, I think my favorite way to rock a pair of leather shorts is with a a half tucked silken blouse, wedge booties and some sort of layering piece on top, like a vest! Add in a crossbody bag and some tights when it gets cooler out, and you're good to go! Since leather has an inherent tough sex appeal, I recommend going for a slightly casual, sightly disheveled look similar to how models off duty in the meatpacking district may look! Think slouchy layers and a casual cool attitude, no bombshell corsets or stilettos needed!

Glitter Loafer

I feel like I recently saw a style blogger rock a pair of glittery loafers like these and died from want! Well, now they can be mine in gold or silver for $215 at J. Crew!

Sheer Shoulder Tee

This Grey Ant tee has a cute, sheer shoulder - though I suppose it would make wearing a bra pretty difficult. Buy at Tobi for the sale price of $46.

My Style Challenge: Bachlorette Weekend at the Beach!

I spent this weekend at the beach with some lovely ladies for my bachlorette party! I decided to do a swimwear outfit post - you can still look stylish while being sun and surf ready! I used to be obsessed with bikinis - at one point I think I owned maybe 14! I've managed to get my addiction under control, partially due to this suit. I mean, it's so amazingly fabulous, why would I need any others?? I love the colors so much and it's the only triangle top that provides support like it has underwire!

Don't forget about accessorizing a swim look. I know that being out in the elements and accessories don't always mix, but there are still a few swimwear basics you'll probably want anyway, so why not make them cute? Certainly a bag of some sort - don't just grab the ugly free tote you got at a conference 10 years ago, look for something functional and cute! And of course you want a coverup - there are a bazillion cute ones out there! And everyone should bring a hat to the beach. Add some cute sandals, maybe a minimal necklace and your shades... See how just those items take you from bathing suit to complete look??
I'm wearing: ViX bikini, cowboy hat from Urban Outfitters, oversized, thin cardigan from Anthropologie, DV by Dolce Vita sandals from ideeli, gifted Dogeared Karma necklace, Tom Ford sunglasses, beach bag from a Hanii Y fashion week presentation many seasons ago!

Looky, I found you all oodles of options at various price points!

Her I am with my lovely bridal party - thanks so much for the great weekend, ladies!!!

Must Buy for Fall: Leather Shorts

I've been wanting a pair of leather shorts since fall of last year! Since they're not something I could ever wear to the office I've held off, but I'm thinking fall 2011 will be it :D If you're finally breaking down and buying a pair, here are some great options, both real and faux, for you!

Outrage Over Lingerie Line for Girls as Young as Four

I know the headline is scandelous, I should first clarify that the line is actually considered "loungerie" - apparently that's a cross between lingerie and lounge wear. That being said, what horrible parent would put a 4-year-old in something remotely related to lingerie???Starting from the beginning, Jours Après Lunes seems to have launched a line for four to 12-year-olds features a range of panties, bras, camisoles and T-shirts with lace edges, ribboned bow detailing and nautical stripes. Ok, the above picture doesn't really bother me, it's just a girl in a tank top. Maybe this is all an upset over a word that isn't actually relevant?!*$^@%^@&
Seriously, what is this? I really debated on it I should even put this picture on my site, but I wanted people to see just how icky this whole thing is. OK, I guess any pictures of prepubescent girls in underwear can be disturbing, and I have seen girls as young as ten in bikinis on the beach.I try to approach issues like this with a level head, but I can't shake the ick factor. Until you hit 12, underwear should be functional, not shown off. Are these pieces different than the My Little Pony print underoos I had. Is it just the photography & styling? Maybe. But either way, I have to say I'm grossed out and wanted to share that feeling with all of you :P

UPDATE: Wanted to point out the the designer made some comments, which you can read all of here. Some of the points she made (translated from French) that I think you should definitely see include:

The materials of my products are used in their underwear because they are highly qualitative: cottons including value-added elasticity, of viscose soft and easy to maintain microfiber wrongly untapped sector of the child. There is no vulgar connotation: the material is totally opaque, no transparency, no lace.

About the term “Loungerie” the word coined by large firms and international style echoed by many brands and many fashion items simply means that my products are mostly opaque parts Loungewear inspired and created with materials from research in the field of lingerie. I recall that in France, the word refers to the linen industry as a whole underwear for women, including men and children. This term alone does not induce sexy concept

All pictures show children playing children’s games as we all did. If you look in detail, you will find many of them small pieces of children’s games: farm animals, dinette, doll accessories, cake timber … There is no second reading to have no vulgar connotation, the postures are not biased. There is only one interpretation: that of children playing together at all. Children do not wear heels, or nail polish or lipstick. Hairstyles are exaggerated as are the games and the world of children.
Does this change your opinion at all? I suppose if all the girls were wearing bathing suits the pictures wouldn't be considered sexual. And it's possible that Americans see sexuality in things that are innocent because we seem to see sexuality everywhere. But the pictures still rub me the wrong way... is there a right way for children to model underwear or should it just be laid flat?

And I'm sorry, but this is a total date night look:

Brides.com Makeup Before / After

So I got an email today about Brides.com's new virtual salon where you can try on dresses and makeup! I have put a little thought into my makeup, but wanted to spend time playing around and not doing work so, without further ado... Not bad - a realistic portrayal of me in eye shadow, liner, mascara, foundation, concealer, blush and lipstick! I went with a pinkish eyeshadow since I'll be switching to my purple contacts for the reception and it really makes the color pop!

I have to dash to a meeting, but I get the feeling instead of new posts, the rest of the day will be me updating this one with outlandish make-up looks! I feel a "vote for what makeup I should wear" poll coming on!

...

So I've played around a little more, check out some of the looks I've created for myself!
This one is a bit of a shimmery, cool-hued look, what I imagine angels look like!
This is my Taylor Momsen look - too heavy for my preference but most of what I like is so subtly different that I felt like I need to change things up a bit!
This is a bit of an adjustment from the very first look I posted - slightly less red eyeshadow used as I discovered I could change the colors depending on where they were applied - I put a highlighter shimmer on my brow bones instead!
The hair options don't work out so well, but it's kinda fun to look at them! This was a "One Click" look - I think we have a winner! :P
