My Style Challenge: Real Curves (And Leg) at La Passione di Milano

I was tres excited to attend the DC Goodwill's 2012 runway show and gala, La Passione di Milano! Except I didn't really know what to wear... luckily my brain recalled a fabu red dress with zexy slit I purchased a few months back on a whim! Hello, Jessica Rabbit!

I admit I was a little insecure wearing this dress at first, if I slouch I get some gut going on... but all the more reason to stand up tall, yes?? I'm wearing: ASOS dress & jacket, DV by Dolce Vita sandals, vintage Chanel purse from Portero, necklace from Nicole Miller, stacking rings from Banana Republic & Tina Tang, pearl bangle and earrings from my mom.
Have we noticed my new hair?? Yes I've gone red for the fall! And I did my makeup myself, I was pretty pleased with my results!
I may not have Angelina Jolie thigh, but I have real curves and a smile!!

The event itself was spectacular, with living statues, a pop-up shop curated with some of the best Goodwill finds (I scored a military-esque H&M jacket for $7!), delicious foodstuff and lots of fellow DC fashion bloggettes, including Brea of What I Wore: Tip to Toe, Whitney Stringer and Morgan Fykes. The show was great, with a live opera singer and some seriously amazing Goodwill finds that I wish I could have gotten my hands on!
Pretty wedding dress!
The opera singer was amazing! She sang the Diva song from the Fifth Element!! Did you all know I used to be an opera singer? aaAAaaAAaaAAA!
This coat... I want it!!

Goodwill is an amazing organization that provides job opportunities for people with disabilities and disadvantages. It really raises people up and makes a difference and I'm proud to be a supporter!

Cropped Tux Blazer

I'm currently on the hunt for an affordably, super cropped tuxedo jacket to wear to my company's gala in November. It's a surprisingly difficult task, I may simply buy a regular one and cut it off! This one by Hugo Boss is cute and on sale, but is still $248... more than I wanted to spend!

Tie Dye Print Silk Pants

Printed pants sound like a hard thing to pull off, but in neutral colors it's really quite easy! I would pair these with a jewel toned top and booties for a perfect fall look. Buy at Need Supply for $127.

Lust for Less: Sequined Cat Head Sweater

Two Lust for Less's in one day!!! I just came across two sequined cat head sweaters and had to share with you!

This sequined tiger swear is pretty badass - great detailing in the face! But at $55 at Revolve Clothing, it's a bit of a splurge!
This lion head sweater at ShopBop is $178. Not cheap, but certainly a more reasonable price!

Lust for Less: Leather Sleeve Trench

Contrast sleeves still feel pretty chic, definitely not a bad buy for fall!  Lots of great options for you, some pricy, some affordable! Here are two I'd recommend!

This stunner is Burberry and has a price tag of $1,495 at Neiman Marcus! Super expensive, but surely a piece you'll treasure for years to come!
Now many of us just could never afford to spend so much on a coat, so here's a cute, much more affordable option! This bebe coat is on sale at Nordstrom for just $140!

Fifteen Wrap Skirts

There's something about an architecturally asymmetric wrap skirt that feels very chic for fall. Not exactly a "trend" but definitely something cute and perhaps not being worn by one out of every five women on the street right now! Here are fifteen different options I have found for you... sorry most are so expensive!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Does Magic Mike

Pointy Oxford

I've been looking for a pair of extra pointy oxfords just like these! There's something extra menswear about a very pointy toe... kinda contrary to what you'd think. Buy them at Urban Outfitters for $179.

Black and white prints are so versatile, and the symmetrical kalidescope style of this one is super chic right now! Buy at Intermix, originally $248 but now on sale for $149!!

Perforated Faux Leather Peplum Top

I bet this faux leather peplum top would look super chic paired with a neon cami underneath and a denim pensil skirt! Buy at South Moon Under for just $72.

Being Dropped Back Into the Sea

Tease no longer!
One of the most terrifying and exciting things after the demise of a seven year relationship has to be the idea of dating again. I know what you're probably thinking - "Hello, it's been like two or three months since your separation, chill out!" Calm down, people, I'm a big girl who knows to wait until she's ready to actually do things! But there's no getting around the fact that I have been thrust back onto the dating scene and will eventually do something about it. Plus, let's be honest, a little voice in the back of my head is screaming, "Oh my god you have to get married so you can have two children before 37!!"

So what's a debutante divorcee to do to prepare herself for her upcoming escapades?? I've talked to a lot of people, married, single and divorced, about reentering the dating pool. And I definitely still have absolutely not clue about how to move forward!!

My therapist did ask an interesting question though: "What are you looking for?" At which point I screamed, "Oh my god I have to get married so I can have two children before 37!!" To which she calmed replied, "So you want a family."

It's funny because my friends know I'm not the most maternal person in the world. And for a while I really questioned whether I wanted children at all. But I've started to go "Aww, lookit the baby" when I see one, and I definitely have already started planning my second wedding (destination Greece, dress already designed by me, groom TBD).

So I guess my strategy will be as follow: when I'm ready, be open to dating all sorts of people, but know when to cut my losses and dip out. I've always been good at knowing when a relationship isn't worth my time - I guess I'll have to be even more efficient now. Anyone know how to identify a guy as  marriage material? After all, I have to get married and have two children before I'm 37!!!!

Sidenote: I was going to put up a picture of me when I was last single, but I have none! Seriously, I even logged into MySpace! So I posted a random, silly one instead.

Love the 40s classic vibe you get from this chic dotted blouse! Would look great mixed with another black & white piece, perhaps a striped jacket or pants? Buy at Anthropologie for $138.

Letterman Sweater Jacket

When I was in Japan I saw a ridiculous amount of varsity jackets and just assumed the trend tried and missed the US, and hit Japan instead. But it seems to have persevered and is back stronger than ever this fall! I really like this sweater jacket from Madewell, definitely tempting at $158!

Inspiration Board: Drop Waist Dresses

Drop waist dresses are continuing to make a resurgence on the runways - definitely consider buying one now! However, the silhouette is much tricker than you'd think! Here are some tips that will help you flatter your shape.

Inspiration Board: Drop Waist Dresses
Unless you have a willowy, model-esque body type, I recommend avoiding straight up and down shift dresses with a drop waist. While certainly very flappery, the lack of definition can hide your shape to the point that you look a bit like a blob!

Know if you have a long or short torso. A drop waist lengthens your torso a bit, but you can choose how much depending on where the "waist" falls. I like it between my natural waist and hips. A very quick and easy way to tell if you have a short waist is to stand up straight, and see if you can fit two hand widths under your bust to your waist (narrowest point). If you can fit more than two hand widths you have a long waist, less than two, a short waist.

Also watch your hemlines carefully! A drop waist shortens your legs, so a shorter hemline is usually the most flattering and easiest to pull off, followed by a maxi length. Mid calf is definitely for the pros!! I say look for something maybe an inch or two above the knees.

Finally, following in the shortened legs vein, choose your footwear carefully! Black booties cut off your legs, pair with black tights if you go that route! But the easiest and most flattering footwear would be a pair of nude pumps that match your skin tone.

Will you rock a drop waist this season?

A Door Opens

It's a new dawn, a new day, and I have new hair.
This day last year I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. It was my wedding day, where I married the man I loved and had been with for almost seven years. What a difference a year makes.

Many of you may already know, but the Mr left me a few months ago. To me, there was no rhyme or reason, no logical explanation for abandoning love. I was caught completely unawares, feeling like everything was ok and that, while there were certainly things to work on, life was going according to plan. But, in a flash, my life and future evaporated.

Though he's tried to make me see from his point of view, I simply don't understand. Maybe I never will. But I can tell you one thing: I will go on.

With the help and support of my family and friends, I can make it through the hard days. Some days I feel so numb that I can barely move and I have to tell myself it's ok to feel this pain. There are nights where I wish to lose myself in partying and booze and I have to keep my head. Moments where I'm so angry all I see is white. There have been times when I feel like I cannot breath, that my body itself is willing me to just give up. I won't.

And there are days when I feel OK. That I am strong and believe in love. As time marches forward, I hear there will be more and more of these days. Where I can bring myself to do the things we did together again. Maybe with someone new.

I truly believe that as you walk through the fire of pain and adversity of life you come out tempered and stronger for it. Thanks to all my loved ones for their support and tolerance of my incessant neediness!

My Style Challenge: Why Does This Label Say Intimates?

I was excited to attend my dear friend Brian's wedding! My college sweetheart, I've always been the type of girl who stays good friends with exes ^.^

So I decided a wedding was a good excuse to buy a new dress! Really any type of event is a good reason to buy something, don't you think?

I was thrilled when I found this pretty floral & lace number in the softest material ever! And then, as I put it on that day... wait, why does the label say "intimate?" Did I wear lingerie to my ex's wedding??? Oppsy!

I'm wearing: Nightgown slip (!?!) from Free People, Michael Michael Kors sunnies and shoes, Hollywould for Target clutch, H&M belt, Dogeared karma necklace.
Me and my hot date, Julie! The views at Oxen Manor were spectacular! Some of my favorite moments included their music - the procession came in to the Muppets singing "Somebody's Getting Married" and their first dance was to "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka. Childhood movies win!
Congrats to Brian and Becca!!

Sneak Peek At Nordstrom Rack

Nordstrom Rack is a new shopping destination for budget conscious women to find awesome deals on all sorts of fab items like shoes, clothes and bags! One's opening Sept 13 in the Tysons Corner, VA region just minutes from my house and I got a chance to sneak a peek before the store opened!

OMG, do not go unless you have plans to spend some cash! I was not able to resist buying up items at such great discounts - It's a constant sale! And it's huge with so many brands, like alice + olivia, Hudson Jeans, St. John and Michael Kors!
I think one of the hidden gems of the store is the lingerie section!! Hello, we probably all put off buying new bras, but it's one of the most important parts of your look. But it's much less painful to buy them for $25 instead of $50, let me tell you. So go forth and buy Wacoal and Calvin Klein and Natori!
Definitely stop by Sept 13 for all the opening events, including a DJ and nommy treats and a chance to win fantabulous prizes!
