Debuting last year, they're completely reinvented and revitalized the concept of the shirt dress! Love their delicate white dresses and jazzy, Asian prints for spring, which were mixed artfully! There's no doubt in my mind that their next collection will have buyers tongues wagging - thank god because right now you can only buy the clothes at A Man and A Woman in NYC and The SHop at Bluebird in London, and Dubai and Tokyo. YES, I now have a shopping goal for my trip to Japan in April! :D

January '12 CapFABB Meetup

Last night I went out to the January CapFABB meet-up at Madewell in Georgetown! Of course it was important to dress chicly, but I didn't want to stress too much about it since I had so many NYFW outfits to plan! So I hadn't planned on taking a picture of my look, but after wearing it all day at work it really grew on me and I might as well post one shot!

I'm wearing: Rag & Bone chambray shirt and printed leggings (the Mr called these pants "man repellent" ha), blazer from Urban Outfitters, red tank from Banana Republic, turban from ASOS, Foley + Corinna city tote, Robert Clergerie boots. Jewelry includes vintage Gucci watch, Juicy Couture leather wrap bracelet and chain bracelet, tiger print and rhinestone bracelets from CUSP, and my beloved Mockingjay pin!

Of course, my fellow CapFABB ladies all looked super stylish!

Maxi skirts were out in full force! And I love Marta's clutch and fuzzy accessories and Alina's glasses and belt!

Lacey of A Lacey Perspective rocked a seriously killer printed suit!

Janice of Facon Magazine looked winter chic - loving the palette, especially the white pants! And that's a great coat! Speaking of..

Inspiration Board: Shorts Suits

It feels way to early to start thinking about warm weather, particularly with ice on the ground here in DC! But I just couldn't stop thinking about shorts suits so...

At least it's nice to dream about warm weather!! And for the first time ever I've stopped thinking of shorts suits as impractical - no I haven't taken a new job with a super lax dress code, but I have started to think a shorts suit can be cute for the weekend!! But how to wear one?

First of all, do not go for tight, booty shorts! A shorts suit look best when somewhat slouchy, contrasting the feminine gams with the menswear inspiration. But your shoe options are somewhat limitless, a shorts suit will look good with stiletto sandals or ballet flats or ankle boots! Finally, after much internal debate I have decided that yes, you can wear a shorts suit now with tights. And if the shorts are long enough, the addition of tights may make them work appropriate, depending on your office.

Mens' shorts suits? Still a no in my book!

My Style Challenge: Casual Friday to the Symphony

Last week my mom gave me a call on Thursday night, asking if I wanted to go with her to see the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center the next day. I was like, "Huzzah, a mother daughter date, of course!" the immediately began to wonder what I could wear! I would have to go straight from the office and it was Casual Friday, hmmm. Now I know I could have worn something nicer - it's not like there's Casual Friday police (though sometimes I think there should be...) but I thought it could be a fun challenge to pull together a look that worked for both situations!

Here I am in an outfit that I think pulls off a lot of different things! I have a nice denim dress as an homage to Casual Friday (I have to mock myself for saying that but I can't think of a better way to explain it!), paired with a black short sleeved turtleneck to make it both work and winter appropriate!

Don't you just die over the majesty of the Kennedy Center? It occurs to me that it's been years since I've seen a show here - totally unacceptable! Luckily for me, I'm also seeing La Cage aux Folles in a few weeks starring George Hamilton! It's the musical The Birdcage was based on - SQUEE!

Even though it was freezing outside, I had to check out the view! Check out the pink soles on heels!

The Kennedy Center overlooks the Potomac river. On a summer night this is probably one of the most romantic places to be in DC!

OMG, isn't this just the cutest ever? Aww, little old couples are my favorite - add in sleeping with a lollipop in your mouth and you get uber adorable!

The symphony itself was amazing - I've seen the NSO countless times and they never fail to impress! We heard Preludes by Debussy, Symphony No. 5 by Sibelius and Beautiful Passing by Steven Mackey, which was definitely the standout of the night!

Fur Sleeved Dress

Try on Clothes From Your Couch!

As an avid online shopper I'm pretty comfortable with zeroing in on clothes that would look good on me and estimating what size I need. But this has taken 5+ years of (constant) practice and I'm still getting things wrong! So I can imagine how frustrating online shopping can be for the average women, having to buy things in multiple sizes, having to ship returns, digging around for a tape measurer... blah!

But all those issues may soon be going away, as a company called Bodymetrics has revealed a body mapping technology this week at CES!! It uses sensors similar to the Kinect to scan your body. Then you sit back in you PJs and virtually try on partner retailer clothing to see how it will look!

I have no idea how well it will work, but I imagine the technology will be available in the next year or so and they estimate it will cost you about $150 - a price I would definitely pay to avoid an obnoxiously crowded mall!

Cobalt vs. Chartreuse

I've seen two colors popping up over and over again as the fashion world prepares for spring: Chartreuse and Cobalt. But which will prevail as victorious and dominate the scene?? There can be only one...

It seems that chartreuse (sometimes leaning more towards neon yellow, sometimes lime) and cobalt blue (sometimes called royal blue) look friggin' amazeballs together!! Two standout colors may be a bit attention grabbing for some, but it's a new year so I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and blind some people in the next few weeks! Just accessorize with neutrals - I recommend grey, which always looks good with everything. But do add in an accent of poppy red, because chartreuse, cobalt blue and poppy red is like the trinity of color awesome.

H&M To Launch Plus Size Collection... In Europe

Some kinda awesome news with a disappointing end: H&M is launching a plus-size collection called Inclusive that will only be available online. Unfortunately you can only shop H&M online in Europe, leaving out all us in the States.

Technically it isn't a plus size collection, as pieces will go from UK sized 32-54, or US 0-20, but since they're included (Inclusive... I get it!) and usually not that's what everyone is focusing on. Colorful, feminine and with a figure-flattering retro appeal, expect many of these pieces to show up on eBay in the near future!!

Dear H&M, set up some e-commerce for us over here, why don't you?!?!?

My 2012 Style Resolutions

As I just mentioned, my Style Challenge evolved from a New Years resolution to push my personal style! Over the past two years I've managed to really get a handle on mix and matching color and prints, accessorizing more heavily - especially layering on the jewelry! - and really just being more consistent with my style and look! It's funny to look back and see bare wrists and fingers, untucked tops and black after black after black. But looking at 2011 I see bright skirts and pants and a sudden insurgence of fitted tailoring!

Vyque from 2010 has nothing in common with Vyque now... except a fabulous taste in tights!

I'm very happy with the evolution of my look, but I'm also excited to find new ways to challenge myself. Now in the middle of 2010 I looked back over my outfit posts and gave myself a few more rules but I didn't really note anything official for 2011. Well I did tell myself to wear more lipstick and I totally did, hooray! But I have big plans for 2012: be totally awesome!! To get to totally awesome, I could waft about aimlessly and hope for the best... this did work out super well for 2011! But I'm already pretty awesome, so getting even more so may be more difficult ;) I think it would definitely help me and be a good challenge to set some new fashion rules to follow!

Try more layers - I've found that I am drawn to a more form fitting silhouette that makes the most sense on my petite, curvy frame. But perhaps I can still rock multiple layers? Surely a cami under a blouse under a vest? I foresee many belt purchases in 2012!
Get loose - In that vein, maybe I don't always need to highlight my waist! I have noted many a time that loose with curves usually ends up frumpy and loose with short usually ends up shorter. But let's try some more boxy sweaters, slouchy tops and peg leg pants! What better way to get all ManRepeller-esque?
Don't rely on color or prints. Over the past year I found it easy to craft visually stimulating outfits with bold colors (like here and here) and crazy mixed prints (like here and here and here)! You know what's actually much harder? Creating an "outfit post worthy" look in neutrals! I'm still not sure it's actually possible, but I'm sure willing to try!
No more than two "I just bought this" outfit posts per month. I cut way down on my shopping in 2011, but I still do't get inspired by all the fabulous clothing I already have. I need to change that ASAP, so I need to limit my outfit posts triggered by buying something new. Time to work shop my closet and start remixing!
If I don't incorporate a piece of clothing I currently own in an outfit post this year, I need to donate it at the end of the year... oh my god, can I really do this? Not my babies!

My Style Challenge: 2011 In Review

Many of you probably don't know that I didn't do outfit posts prior to January 2010. That was when I gave myself a slightly belated resolution to follow - up my fashion game. I gave myself the following rules for dressing myself every morning in the hopes that I would break out of my ho hum rut:

Do not wear the same pair of trousers to work twice a week
Before you leave the house put ON one accessory
Wear non-black shoes at least once per week
Wear color and/or print top & bottom combo at least once per week
Wear a skirt or dress at least once per week
Wear a multi-layered ensemble (not just top and cardigan!) once every other week
Try dressing down a cocktail dress at least once a month
Planning your outfits the night before is better than pretending you don't sleep in and throwing on whatever's closest each morning
Don't be afraid to stand out!!

Needless to say, I pretty much have blown those rules out of the water! Check out my 2010 Review Part One and 2010 Review Part Two to see how my sense of style evolved into what I consider a strong base. But I really think 2011 is when my personal style really started to shine!!!

Ahh, some of my favorite looks from 2011! As you can see, I began to more heavily accessorize in the first part of the year, played around with mixed prints, began to really get obsessed with blazers for layering and rocked some serious color!!

Right about summer time I began to really understand what it meant to pile on the jewelry! I practically wore every single bracelet I owned at my bridal shower which I think really helped me break through my wall!

In the last part of the year I got married!! I loved my dress, which I designed myself and highly recommend others do! I also got obsessed with my indigo blazer courtesy of Zara, chopped off my hair and went blonde!!

2011 was amazing, I'm not sure how I can have an even better year! I do plan to push my style boundaries though, what style resolutions should I make? I'm thinking I should wear more brooches and perhaps try out more monochrome looks... What suggestions do you have for me??

NYE What To Wear: Staying In

Please note this is not having pople over - that's my NYE House Party post! This is all about being lazy and sitting on your couch for New Years, something I'm still tempting to do tomorrow night! I was honstly just going to post a Snuggie and leave it at that, but I changed my mind and have decided to at least attempt to find a cute loungewear outfit!

Hooray, some cozy yet styling! Printed lounge pants rule, even if they're loud and hideous, who's going to judge you? But these are quite cute giraffe print! Add on a tank and warm wrap sweater, some slipper socks for when you need to go to the kitchen for more boxed wine and you're set!!

Now I've never gone to a restaurant to celebrate New Years Eve, but I have been out to eat before and I certainly have some opinions on looking nice while horfing that pan seared halibut!

You'll be at a table for most of the night - a long slit skirt looks totally amazing while sitting down!! And now is the time to bust out your tallest, most uncomfortable shoes! You can also bring your fab clutch as you won't have to carry it all night. Bonus points for one that can stand on its own and take up less space at the table!! And this is one occasion I wouldn't recommend layering too many bracelets, way too jangly every time you take a bite! Find a stunning statement cuff to bling it up with instead!

NYE What To Wear: House Party

Now house party is a pretty generic term that can mean anything from parents needing a place to socialize that's kid-friendly to formal cocktail soiree to house-trashing, cops coming crazy town. For the purposes of this post I'm considering it something in between: adult but not out, with hip music just loud enough that you can hear a conversation but maybe jam out a little too.

I personally think a house party is the perfect chance to dress up some cute shorts!!! I love the idea of rocking leopard print ones with a tight hot pink top and throwing a oversized, chunky knit sweater on top to balance it all out. Since you should be able to find a place to sit if needed, pull out your tall, uncomfortable shoes that make your legs look super long! And be sure to wear a bright, stand out coat - easy to find when there are 30 thrown on the guest bed!

NYE What to Wear: Hipster Bar

I've already posted some tips on what to wear if you're heading out to a club for NYE, now it's time to share my knowledge on dressing for the hipster NYE!

Hipsters love their dance parties, but make no mistake - this is nothing like dressing to go to an actual dance club! This isn't about looking like a sexy starlet, it's all about looking cool without trying too hard. Which of course, takes way more effort :P

While really anything can go, it is New Years Eve so why not dress up a little? A collared shift dress with some festive embellishment is a perfect balance between glam and too cool! But I would lean towards wearing some flats instead of tall heels, like these chic oxfords. Add on a hat (preferably mens-inspired) over messy hair and a retro faux fur wrap to complete the look! I would again go for a mini crossbody bag, though - they're just so perfect for dancing!

Just a few days left in 2012!!! If you're like many of my friends, you've just figured out what you'll be doing and definitely have no idea what to wear. Well, that depends on where you'll be when the ball drops!

In my younger days I went downtown to a hotspot club where the line went around the block and that was for people who pre-bought their tickets! If that's your plan for the weekend, I definitely have some tips for you:

Wear a dress to catch all the strobing lights - now is the time for bright sequins, not your LBD!! But be sure it's not too bodycon - you'll want to be able to shake your booty! Speaking of, find a pair of comfortable heels to dance in. I recommend Cole Haan, which have cute shoes that won't leave you limping after an hour. And don't bring a clutch that you'll probably lose! Find a cute crossbody mini bag to pack in your essentials. Finally, keep warm until you get inside by rocking a cute leather jacket with a cozy lining like shearling!

My Style Challenge: Geometric Fishnets

There are very few times I think nude hose is acceptable. Meeting with the Queen or attending a formal ball during the winter were my previous ones. Now I can add: layering under fishnets when it's cold out to the list!

I almost included some patterned black tights/fishnets in my Five Tights Every Woman Should Own piece, but decided five was a nice round number so left them out. Hmm, now I'm beginning to wonder if that was a mistake... though I suppose lace tights cover the general idea!

As I grew up I was lucky enough to get my hair cut by my aunt, who was a senior hair dresser at the local Red Door Salon. Its length was almost always about chest length, though once up to the chin... only to immediately be in the state of growing out. As for color, I never had any salon work done though I did dabble in Manic Panic and drugstore color in a box.

My hair usually looked like this. And yes, I used to have my eyebrow pierced because I am tote badass!

Once I went to college, I stopped having my aunt cut my hair and started hitting up a real salon - got me some highlights and everything! But then I graduated and something strange happened... I lost my hair fear!

Pretty much the shortest my hair ever was!

Hello pixie cut! I must say chopping off 11 inches for the first time was a little scary, bit totally liberating! Showering took five seconds, styling even less and I often cut my own hair so I didn't have to go in for a trim every four weeks. I adored my short hair, which made me feel fun and fearless! And if you thought that was brave...

Again, I am obviously badass!

Why hello faux hawk! As you can see, I started very much enjoying playing with my hair once I stopped using it to feel glam & feminine.

I gaze into your soul!

I kept my hair short for a pretty long time, perhaps 2-3 years, but eventually I craved more change! So I grew it into a banged, chin length bob which I also very much loved. But I found that having a short bob made me want to be able to pull my hair back! So I continued to grow it out with my bangs for awhile and threw in some red highlights for funsies. Then I found myself hooked on Japanese hair straightening!

So shiny and smooth!!

I had always had coarse, kinda frizzy hair, but while my hair was super short and I got older it seemed to get much worse! I didn't really know how to handle it so I started getting my hair straightened one a year. I stopped coloring it since I was worried about over damaging it and had that swingy shiny hair that I saw on tv. Sure it had no body, but I didn't really mind and it was tres easy to deal with! But eventually I found it was hard to properly straighten my roots - I kept getting weird creases in my hair! So I decided to figure out how to deal with the curl... turns out I have natural beach waves!

Remember this outfit post from the summer?

I was engaged at this point so kept growing out my hair for my wedding, and decided to add in some purple highlights! After all, medium to long hair had begun to feel somewhat boring and I really needed to spice things up! Yes I kept the purple for the big day :) But just a three days after saying "I do"...

Snippy snippy again!

I chopped off my hair! Since I finally understood my hair's texture, I went for a wavy bob similar to when Scarlett Johanasson cut all her hair off. I literally kept a picture of her hair in my jewelry box for nine months, I just couldn't wait to cut my hair post-wedding! But then I had a completely random impulse just last week.

Do blondes have more fun?

Yup, I went to my amazing hair dresser for the past four years or so and demanded she turn me into a blonde! Luckily she's pretty confident in my commitment to my whims and turned this out. I admit I had this impulse a few year ago and a few of my friends talked me out of it, but I really hadn't thought about it again until now.

Some of my friends tried to talk me out of it again, but I decided to ignore them this time. Why? I know that I still look cute, but that blonde isn't going to be the most flattering color on me. I was born with dark hair for a reason after all! But trying to look the best I possibly can be doesn't at all drive my hair choices - everything I do is for fun and to throw people for a loop! All I can think about is how Cindy Crawford found a look that really worked for her three decades ago and hasn't changed since... doesn't that sound awful to you?

After all, hair will grow out, but being a risk-taking, blonde Asian will forever be an awesome memory! HUGE thanks to Sylvia at Noufal Haircolor Studio for making me look awesome per usual! The only place I'll go in the DC Metro to get my hair done - I must recommend checking the salon out if you're only meh about your current stylist!

My Style Challenge: Holiday Parties!

I had three holiday parties to attend last week, whew! I decided to rock three very unique looks since each soiree was a completely different type of event. First up was the South Moon Under | Refinery 29 Holiday Party:

All my outfit pics came out a little blurry, but this one is probably the best. Julie, I love you but less shakey shakey when you use my camera! As you can see, I finally rocked my leather on leathuh look - something I mentioned wanted to do last year! It was freezing out and I wanted to look rock and roll while staying warm so this was the perfect look. I'm wearing: Leather leggings by The Row, leather tee from Nordstrom, vintage faux fur jacket, necklace from Urban Outfitters, Robert Clergerie boots.

Next up my office department had its own holiday party (I've already posted my company's holiday party look). Our department is pretty big, about 30 or so people, and I wanted to look festive and dressed up while still being work appropriate!

Needless to say, I was a smash in this oversized pink houndstooth print dress! It's such a stand out piece, I wish I had more opportunities to wear it, but it's just not an every day kind of dress.

I paired it with a faux suede jacker with some peaked shoulders and a draped front for fun layering warm time. I'm wearing: Marc Jacobs dress, Mossimo jacket from Target, Foley + Corinna bag, Sam Edelman silver wedges, Banana Republic stacking rings, Juicy Couture bracelets, vintage Gucci watch.

Last up was my husband's company holiday party. His office is relatively young, I think the average age is somewhere in the mid-20s! They tend to dress more casually as well, but I refuse to wear jeans to any holiday party!

Since it was a younger crowd I pulled out my fabulous mini ice skater dress! I'm wearing: Opening Ceremony dress, red shoes and teal blazer both from Zara, strand of pearls from Nordstrom, furry leopard bag from Revolve Clothing, earrings from South Moon Under, ring from my mom, purple belt from H&M, new hair from Noufal Haircolor Studio (more on that tomorrow!)

My Style Challenge: Art House

An outfit by fellow DC blogger Rachel of Project Beltway has been stuck in my mind, so I decided to put together my own version of the look!

Rachel is on the right! Holly from Refinery 29 - DC on the left.

As you can see, not every look need three thousand billion accessories and five tops layered on and a bag and shoes that each would cost more than your rent! Sometimes all you need to do is thoughtfully put together a few pieces to create a chic outfit - true story!

Here is my look! You can see the inspiration, but also can tell how I adjusted it to my curvier, petite frame. My sweater has a more tailored fit to show off my curves and prevent drowning in fabric and my midi skirt falls just an inch below my knees instead of mid calf. I also work wedge shooties that dip low in the front, helping to keep my legs looking long! I added my vintage faux fur coat, wool beret and a few accessories to polish the look and I was ready to go! I don't know about you, but whenever I put on a beret I feel all artsy fartsy.

I've been looking for another peplum skirt to post (I almost posted a purple alice + olvia one, but realized I already posted it in black)! This has a faux leather ruffle that has a bit of a fishtail effect in the back. Buy at Nasty Gal for $68.
