Tee Brand Poll

I blame the celebrities, but I've become obsessed with t-shirts lately. Plain, slightly loose and way soft, I really can't own enough! So what brand do you prefer?

Flip Flops Vs Thong Sandals

Are all thong sandals flip flops? I say no, even though they have the same shape and really the only difference is the materials used. Flip flops are generally rubber. And whilst they may make the same "thwap" noise while walking, thong sandals made of leather and other "dressier" materials. Therefore, I claim you can wear them to work, maybe only on Fridays though.

Chipped Nails

I just read a New York Times article about fashionistas purposely having chipped nails...
"PITY the mothers and grandmothers. Visible bra straps, glaringly obvious roots — these are but a few of the grooming no-nos that have become yes-yeses in recent years.
Now there is another stylistic tic that would have been unthinkable on a proper lady in your Aunt Beatrice’s day. Over the last few years — since the era of the skull print scarf, let’s say, or the (metaphorical) rise of the Olsen twins — having streaked, chipped or just plain grotty nail polish no longer suggests drug addiction, manual labor or pure laziness. Like untied high-tops, thread-worn jeans and bedhead, it’s now part of a deliberate look.
And chipped polish is not sported solely by nail-biting school students and downtown punkers. It has been spotted uptown, in professional settings and gala parties, behind department store sales counters and even (gasp!) on beauty and fashion industry insiders."
That's just the first three paragraphs, but you get the idea! While I appreciate how much easier it is to let a manicure go a few days, doesn't this just feel like an excuse to be lazy?

The Botox Breast Lift

Good lord, I really can't believe this is real! "Dermatologist to the Stars," Dr. Patricia Wexler, was on "Oprah" and talked about how she injected botox into women's breasts to give them a noninvasive, temporary lift. It also imporves posture, apparently.
Lasting about 11 weeks, both breasts would cost you between $1,500 and $2,000. I don't know how much a surgical breast lift would cost, but don't you think you might as well go for broke at this point? It least with surgery it's permanent! Of course, it's more dangerous. But botox can drift around in the body a bit, and paralyzing your pectorals can limit you. No push ups or skiing for you!

Iman vs Heidi

Iman is the host of Project Runway Canada and seems to think she's better qualified. She was recently quoted saying, "Definitely Heidi and I come from two different places," Iman tells the World Entertainment News Network. "I'm not belittling Heidi Klum, but I have been in fashion much more than she has. Not to toot my own horn, but I have been one of the best runway girls.
"I know clothes, and I know about working hand in hand with designers — I mean, I've worked with Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, John Galliano. Yves St. Laurent — he created a whole collection for me. Tom Ford, Valentino. Versace. Jean Paul Gaultier. Thierry Mugler … I could go on and on."
Oh snap, who do you like better? Even though you've probably seen only one or the other, let's be judge anyway!

Circular Fashion

I just read somewhere that blue nails will be trendy for Fall.... really?!?!? I'm beginning to feel like we have two cycles - boho for Spring / Summer and gothic leather for Fall / Winter. Brights for S/S; dark plums and navy for F/W. Sailor for S/S; Equestrian for F/W. Girly for S/S; Menswear for F/W. We must break the cycle! Latch onto new trends and discard them just as quickly! Wait, maybe it's more sensible to not have to toss last season's wardrobe... And we do still have new trends popping up, such as painterly and stars. What trends are you ready to chuck though? Personally, I may vomit is I see another sequin covered dress or top!

Celebrity Labels

I'm so insanely sick of hearing about potential celebrity clothing labels and collections!! Though I suppose if I ever got famous, I'd want to cash in too, right??

Dsquared2 Fall / Winter 2008

Model Smoking On Runway - Credit: APHmm, I liked the Dquared2 theme of sexy, kinda punk librarian. A little more subtle than their usual collection though. But what caught my eye was they sent a model down the runway smoking a cigarette. And while I doubt to many young girls follow the shows in Milan, it promotes the idea that a cigarette is a fashion accessory. This bothers me a little, even though I am a smoker, as I thought the mindset of cigarettes = glam was so over. I think the designers are just lashing back after too skinny models got banned in some places; I know in Milan recently ruled that runway models have to be 16 and over and be able to present a medical certificate to show they are not suffering from an eating disorder. Well, it is Europe - everyone smokes! So maybe it's just not a big deal? What do you think?

Gap & Child Labor in India

Child workers, some as young as 10, have been found working in a textile factory in conditions close to slavery to produce clothes that appear destined for Gap Kids, one of the most successful arms of the high street giant.

Speaking to The Observer, the children described long hours of unwaged work, as well as threats and beatings.

Gap said it was unaware that clothing intended for the Christmas market had been improperly subcontracted to a sweatshop using child labour. It announced it had withdrawn the garments involved while it investigated breaches of the ethical code imposed by it three years ago.

Hmm, it's hard to know what to think on this situation. On the one hand, I do believe the Gap would never intentionally employ child sweat shop labor. On the other hand, they were still negligent on their standards and that's no one's fault but their own. Do you think they need to be boycotted in case more of their clothes are made in sweatshops??

The Burkini

In case you didn't know, A burka is a full-length garment worn by some Muslim women. The "Burkini" is a new phenomenon in Australia–basically a burka Muslim women can wear to the beach and swim in. It's even become popular with women of other religions as it certainly protects from sun damage. The Burkini is made from ultraviolet- and water-protected polyester and sells for $125-$160. You can purchase one from Ahiida if this is up your ally.

Congress Mulling Bill To Protect Designers

Remember when I posted the copycat DVF dress being sold at Forever 21? Well Congress is finally getting their hineys in gear and thinking about protecting clothing designs under copyright laws! While I admit have bought a knock-off or two in my time, I really can't believe it's taken them this long to protect the fashion industry. Fashion is totally art and people need to realize that! Though all fashion kinda inspires each other and would this bring the industry to a sluggish pace? Or move it forward and faster. Hmmm. Read the whole article at Women's Wear Daily and then answer the poll!
